The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland entered a crucial stage on Matchday 5 as Groups C and D took center stage for their second round of group-stage fixtures.

Fans were treated to a spectacle of classic games that produced a combined 16 goals across four matches. 

Italy secured passage into the knockout phase, Ghana breathed new life into their campaign, France survived a frantic five-goal thriller, and two heavyweights shared the spoils in an instant classic.

Group D: Italy Reach the Knockout Stage as Japan and USA Draw

Italy 3-0 New Zealand

Italy became the first team of the day to secure a spot in the Round of 16 after overcoming a resilient New Zealand team. The first half was a cagey, tactical battle, with New Zealand’s defensive block frustrating the Azzurre and limiting their clear-cut chances. 

The complexion of the game changed completely in the second half after Italy made a series of effective substitutions.

Rosanna Ventriglia came off the bench and provided the clinical edge Italy had been missing, striking a brilliant right-footed finish in the 78th minute to break the Kiwis' resistance.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, Rosanna Ventriglia soon struck again in the 83rd minute, capitalising on an accurate delivery to send the ball off the crossbar and over the line.

With only seconds remaining before the 90-minute mark, fellow substitute Karen Appiah capped off the victory in the 89th minute, treating the crowd to a magnificent outside-of-the-boot strike from the edge of the area. The 3-0 scoreline sends Italy to the top of Group D with six points.

Japan 2-2 USA

The marquee matchup of Matchday 5 featured a historic rivalry between the reigning AFC U-20 champions, Japan, and a determined United States team desperate to bounce back from an opening-day defeat. What unfolded was a fiercely competitive, elite-level display of women's youth football. 

The USA struck first in the 35th minute when Ainsley McCammon opened the scoring with an excellent header off a corner kick. 

Japan's trademark fluid passing and structural discipline eventually allowed them to claw back in the second half, leveling the score in the 74th minute as Natsumi Tago capitalised on a takeaway and finished from close range. 

The USYNT responded immediately just seconds later, in the 75th minute, when Alex Buck got behind the defence and fired home to retake the lead for the Americans. 

However, Japan kept fighting and found a dramatic second equalizer by way of a spectacular curler from the edge of the box in the 83rd minute from Konoha Nakamura. While Japan remains in a strong position with four points, the solitary point keeps the USA's hopes alive heading into the final matchday. 

Group C: Ghana Revive Their Hopes as France Beat Ecuador

Ghana 3-1 South Korea

Following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Ecuador in their opener, Ghana's Black Princesses entered Matchday 5 knowing that anything less than a victory could leave their World Cup hopes in serious danger.

Facing a technically disciplined South Korea side, the Ghanaians produced a performance filled with power, pace, and clinical execution. 

Midfielder Sarah Nyarko scored in the 52nd minute with a powerful right-footed shot from inside the penalty area. 

Ghana doubled their advantage just three minutes later, in the 55th minute, when Ivy Osei Owusu produced a composed finish to chip the goalkeeper and make it 2-0.

South Korea refused to go away quietly, but Ghana sealed the match on a swift counterattack in the 84th minute as Ruth Amponsah added Ghana's third goal. 

South Korea managed to pull one back late through an uncredited consolation goal, but the 3–1 triumph completely alters the landscape of Group C, leaving Ghana tied with Ecuador on three points and setting up a thrilling finale. 

France 3-2 Ecuador

Ecuador entered the match full of confidence following their comprehensive Matchday 1 victory, while France was looking for their first win after drawing with South Korea. The two teams produced one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far.

Ecuador struck first in the 10th minute when Dariana Moran found the net to give the South Americans an early lead. France responded in the 21st minute as Justine Rouquet coolly converted a penalty to level the score at 1-1. 

Just before the break, Ecuador retook the advantage in the 41st minute through a penalty of their own, clinically dispatched by Fiorella Pico. 

France established control early in the second half through the masterful creativity of Visa Player of the Match Aude Bizet. Aude Bizet scored in the 48th minute to make it 2-2 and give France renewed belief. 

With the match appearing to be heading towards a draw, France found a dramatic late winner in the 87th minute when Landryna Lushimba Bilombi struck to complete the comeback and seal a vital 3-2 victory for the French side. 

France moves to the top of Group C with four points, while Ecuador remains on three points.
