The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup exploded into life on Saturday, featuring 14 goals across four fixtures, debut breakthroughs, and tense tactical standoffs. 

The premier youth tournament got underway in style as Groups A and B took center stage across Poland.

GROUP A

Poland 3–0 Argentina (Arena Katowice)

Tournament hosts Poland could not have scripted a more perfect introduction to their first-ever FIFA women's tournament appearance on home soil. 

Backed by an energetic crowd at Arena Katowice, the Polish team delivered a tactical masterclass in high-pressing efficiency.

From the opening whistle, Poland’s aggressive front foot severely disrupted Argentina’s build-up play. 
Exploiting wide channels with overlapping runs, the hosts systematically carved open the South American defense to register a commanding 3–0 shutout thanks to goals by Oliwia Zwiaze, Maja Zielinska and an unfortunate own goal by Argentina's Annika Paz.

Mexico 2–2 Benin (Arena Katowice)

The second Group A fixture provided the day's most dramatic narrative as tournament debutants Benin fought back from the brink against a favored Mexican side.

Mexico exerted their authority early, commanding tempo to take a deserved 1–0 lead into the break through Alex Soto. Montserrat Salvidar then made it two after the break, and it looked as if Mexico would sail to a comfortable win.

However, Benin bounced back, as West Africans stunned El Tri with two goals through Romaine Gandounou in the 56th and 87th minutes respectively to celebrate a historic first point on the global stage.

GROUP B

Brazil 4–1 Tanzania (Stadion Miejski Bielsko-Biała)

South American champions Brazil laid down an ominous marker for the rest of the field, brushing aside debutants Tanzania with a lethal aerial and set-piece display.

Thaynara drew first blood in the 14th minute before Tanzania showed immense resilience, drawing level via a Winfrida Gerald penalty. 

The second half, however, belonged to dynamic forward Evelin, who restored the lead before adding a clinical header to complete her brace. Midfielder Vitorinha capped off the dominant display with an 81st-minute thunderbolt from distance.

Canada 1–1 England (Arena Sosnowiec)

The day's marquee matchup featured two traditional women's football heavyweights in a highly tactical, physically grueling draw in Sosnowiec.

Both sides prioritised defensive compactness: England’s mid-block successfully neutralised Canada's vertical passing lanes, while the Canadian backline managed to contain the Young Lionesses' wide runners. 

Although Anabele Chukwu gave Canada the lead, England refused to be beaten, as they won a penalty in the dying minutes which Rachel Maltby successfully converted.

A hard-fought 1–1 stalemate leaves both teams tied in the group standings.
