Lothar Matthäus has ruled out Bayern Munich as a likely destination for Florian Wirtz and suggested Chelsea could be an option if the Liverpool midfielder continues to struggle at Anfield.
In his Sky Germany column, the former Germany captain argued that Bayern already has enough attacking options to make a move for Wirtz unlikely. He also suggested Chelsea could be a destination, potentially reuniting the Liverpool midfielder with Xabi Alonso.
Matthäus’s comments are speculation. There is no confirmation that Chelsea have approached Liverpool or that the club are willing to sell Wirtz.
Why Matthäus Sees No Bayern Route
“At the moment, I honestly wouldn’t know where Wirtz would fit in, and I simply don’t see any realistic short-term possibility of bringing him to Bayern Munich,” Matthäus wrote.
Matthäus cited Bayern’s attacking options, including Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, as another reason a move for Wirtz is unlikely.
He also argued that Wirtz receives more support from his German teammates, who look to get him on the ball, while Liverpool have other players they turn to in attack.
Why Chelsea Could Become an Option
Matthäus suggested Chelsea could be an option because Alonso worked with Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, where they won the 2023-24 Bundesliga title.
“If Wirtz continues to face criticism at Liverpool and fails to show the joy and freedom in his game that we know he has, then at some point all parties will have to sit down together and perhaps find a solution,” Matthäus wrote.
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for a fee that could reach £116 million. His contract runs until 2030. He has started all seven of his appearances this season but is yet to score, registering one assist.
He played 65 minutes in Liverpool’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City in his latest Premier League outing.
