English midfielder Curtis Jones has earned positive reviews from the Italian press following his Serie A debut appearance for Inter Milan on Sunday.

Jones, who left Liverpool for Milan last week, came off the bench to replace Croatian midfielder Petar Sucic in Inter's 1-0 win against Cagliari. 

The 25-year-old contributed to Inter’s solid midfield display in the final 25 minutes of Sunday’s game with six duels recorded, 28 touches and 93 per cent pass accuracy.

Jones also made history on Sunday after John Stones replaced Manuel Akanji, becoming the first two Englishmen to be on the pitch for the Italian outfit at the same time.

ITALIAN MEDIA REACTS TO CURTIS JONES’ DEBUT 

Sunday’s debut ended as a memorable game for Jones as Inter Milan bagged back-to-back wins in their opening Serie A fixtures.

The club media summarised Jones’ performance as very impactful. 

“This is where Curtis Jones’ Nerazzurri journey begins, making his first-ever appearance in an Inter shirt,” the club website noted. 

“The 65th minute saw him come on for Petar Sucic, with the English midfielder immediately getting involved during a crucial phase of the game. 

“28 touches, a 93% pass completion rate, one shot and six duelsplenty of football packed into half an hour as Jones made his debut and played his part in securing the three points for Inter.”

Elsewhere, La Gazetta dello Sport praised Jones for his instant impact in the game as Inter held on to their early goal despite the tensed end to the game.

“To grasp the sheer force of personality possessed by Curtis Jones, Inter's latest British recruit, one only needed to witness him demand his first touch in Italian football from a throw-in,” Gazetta dello Sport wrote. 

“It was the 65th minute of the Cagliari-Inter clash, and he instantly showcased the audacity of a truly talented individual. 

“Moments later, he unleashed an ambitious shot, deflected for a corner – a clear sign he was ready to disrupt the game's rhythm with his exuberance and seasoned approach.”

INTER COACH DEFENDS CURTIS JONES’ DECISION 

Following Sunday’s 1-0 win, Inter Milan coach Christian Chivu expressed delight with the midfield options available and he noted that Jones is adapting to his style of play.

He also highlighted that Jones has been a long-term target for Inter Milan and he is upbeat about his talents to improve his squad this season.

“The new players have just arrived. Playing on certain pitches with a certain amount of pressure is their bread and butter,” Chivu was quoted by Goal.

“However, Stones needs to regain his fitness, and Jones needs to adapt to our game . Their attitude is nothing to criticise; they're two exemplary players, and we're happy to have them.

“In midfield, we've been thinking about Curtis for a while now because of his personality, intensity, quality, and calmness. We have a midfield of great players; it's up to me to choose the best and make everyone happy.”
