Manchester United have received a timely boost ahead of their Premier League trip to Chelsea, with Kobbie Mainoo returning to training following an injury absence.

The 21-year-old midfielder has missed Manchester United's last four matches after picking up an issue during the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

However, Mainoo was pictured back in training at Carrington on Wednesday, raising hopes that he could return to the matchday squad for Saturday's trip to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Michael Carrick confirmed the positive development, revealing that the midfielder had completed some training with the first-team group.

"Kobbie has done a little bit of training yesterday. So, he's back and around the group, so that's obviously positive," Carrick explained.

According to reports, Mainoo has travelled with the United squad to London and is expected to be available for selection, although his involvement from the start remains uncertain.

His potential return comes at an important time for United, who have struggled for consistency this season and managed just one Premier League victory.

Carrick under pressure ahead of Chelsea clash

Mainoo's availability could provide a welcome boost for Carrick, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como and a damaging 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.

United have opted to retain the manager for now, but Saturday's encounter represents another important opportunity to get their campaign back on track.

Chelsea will also be looking for a response after suffering a home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before their Carabao Cup elimination against Liverpool on Wednesday.

With both sides desperate for a positive result, Mainoo's potential return could prove significant as United look to improve their fortunes at Stamford Bridge.
