One of the biggest sagas of the 2026 summer transfer window was Lamine Camara's botched deadline day move to Chelsea, and a new twist appears to have emerged.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Camara could be set for a move elsewhere in 2027, with AS Monaco resigned to losing him to the Premier League.
Liverpool have emerged as a likely destination for the Senegal international, having tracked him extensively.
The 22-year-old has been impressive for Monaco all season, enhancing his reputation as one of the leading midfield talents in European football.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool's long-standing interest in Lamine Camara, makes Chelsea revelation
Transfer expert Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that Chelsea have been uninterested in signing Camara since their deadline day encounter with Monaco.
He pointed out that Liverpool are also a team that are looking to bring in a midfielder, and their previous groundwork on Camara has seen them compile detailed scouting reports.
“Many of you have been asking me about Lamine Camara. Guys, he was this close to joining Chelsea. It was a ‘Here We Go’ on Deadline Day, but then the deal collapsed because of the domino effect involving Monaco.
"Chelsea were furious. The situation became very tense. Since that moment, Chelsea have disappeared from the Lamine Camara story. Chelsea were no longer in talks over Lamine Camara because they believed Monaco’s behaviour was completely inappropriate."
"So, Liverpool are following Lamine Camara. They have been tracking him for a long time. There have been some calls regarding Alex Scott, and Liverpool have also been tracking Lamine Camara."
“What I can tell you is that Liverpool are planning to do something important in midfield in 2027, adding very good players to that area. So, these are not just backup players. They want players who can be starters or future starters at Liverpool."
Camara was the subject of a dramatic late collapse of a proposed deadline-day move to Chelsea caused by an abrupt U-turn from Monaco, leading Chelsea to completely withdraw from negotiations.
The rift has now cleared a path for Liverpool to sign the versatile midfielder not merely as a rotational squad player, but as a high-volume ball-winner capable of earning a regular starting role in their midfield rebuild.
After they pulled the plug on the Chelsea deal, Monaco promised Camara that he would get a better move in 2027, and Anfield is his likely destination.
Why Lamine Camara fits Iraola’s tactical machine at Anfield
Lamine Camara's physical stature, ball-striking capability, and dynamic recovery coverage make him an ideal candidate for Andoni Iraola's high-intensity pressing system at Liverpool.
The Senegalese midfielder has won 62 duels this season in Ligue 1, recovering the ball 1.50 times per game, on average.
He has completed 20 tackles and committed just ten fouls in his league outings this season, underlining his nature as an expert ball-winner and all-action midfielder.
Valued at approximately £59m (€70m) by Monaco, the Senegalese international offers a more cost-effective target compared to Bournemouth’s £100m-rated Alex Scott, who has also been linked with a reunion with former Bournemouth boss Iraola.
Liverpool promoted Trey Nyoni to a more prominent role this season, and the youngster's ability to influence multiple phases of the game has made him an important part of Iraola's plans.
Despite his emergence, the Reds are evaluating mid-season tactical options, and Camara's ability to operate both as a box-to-box midfielder and a deep defensive screen provides the technical versatility required to anchor the Reds' central pivot for years to come.
