South Africa opened their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group-stage campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Angola. Lyle Foster’s late strike proved decisive in a tense encounter at the Stade de Marrakech.
Appollis Gave Bafana Bafana the Early Advantage
Bafana Bafana dominated possession for large spells of the first half, dictating the tempo and creating several promising opportunities.
Their control was rewarded in the 20th minute when Orlando Pirates’ Oswin Appollis found the back of the net. This gave South Africa a deserved early lead.
Angola, labelled underdogs before kick-off, refused to sit back. Instead, they began to ask serious questions of an inexperienced South African center-back pairing. Their persistence paid off in the 35th minute when Show equalised, drawing Angola level and shifting the match's momentum.
Angola continued to apply pressure, giving South Africa little relief. Williams made a series of composed saves, keeping Bafana Bafana in the contest.
The intensity increased as the half progressed, and the match became more physical. South Africa collected two yellow cards late in the first half, shown to Modiba and Sithole, as the teams went into the break level at 1–1.
VAR Drama and Foster’s Decisive Finish
South Africa thought they had regained the lead five minutes into the second half when substitute Tshepang Moremi scored. VAR stopped the celebrations, ruling out the goal for Lyle Foster’s offside involvement in the build-up.
Bafana Bafana remained patient and continued to push forward. Their persistence paid off in the 79th minute when Foster redeemed himself by curling a superb finish into the top corner to restore South Africa’s lead.
Angola made five substitutions in the second half in an attempt to change the outcome. Yet, they struggled to make a meaningful impact. South Africa managed the closing stages professionally to secure their first AFCON group-stage victory.
What’s next?
South Africa showed composure and resilience, claiming all three points in their opening match. At the same time, Angola fought hard and displayed intensity, but their strong performance left them frustrated. As a result, Bafana Bafana secured a positive start to their AFCON campaign.
Building on this momentum, South Africa will face Egypt on 26th December. Looking back, South Africa stunned the host nation with a memorable victory when the two sides last met in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019. Meanwhile, Angola will take on Zimbabwe in Group B action on the same day.
