Manchester City were able to rescue an opening day win with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes. Both goal scorers were from defenders with Marc Guehi scoring the first from a corner before Josko Gvardiol scored a late winner.
Marcus Tavernier capitalised on a defensive miscommunication to give the Cherries the lead but the visitors couldn't hold on.
Player Ratings
Manchester City
GK - Gianluigi Donnarumma-7
Didn't do much wrong in between the sticks. The goal he couldn't do much about and made some key saves to keep the hosts in the game.
RB - Rico Lewis-6
Made some forward runs which caused Bournemouth some trouble on the overlap and had a shot saved. The only thing lacking was his final ball into the box at times.
LB - Josko Gvardiol-8
Scored the winning goal and made a game saving tackle in the first half. In the second half started to get forward more to get the sky blues the win
CB - Ruben Dias-7
Probably the best defender on the pitch for City. Broke up play when he could to keep City in the game. Led the game in touches but couldn't do much with them.
CB - Abdukodir Khusanov-6
Didn't do much wrong but maybe could've dealt with the buildup more convincingly for the goal.
CDM - Elliot Anderson-7
Was the most energetic player for City trying to keep the ball moving before being subbed in the 63rd minute.
CDM - Marc Guehi-8
Got the goal to draw City level.Trying to get used to his new position under the new gaffer. Made positive runs when he could and stopped counters.
LM - Antoine Semenyo-6
Looked dangerous at times but lacked final product taking too many dribbles instead of delivering it into the danger men.
RM - Phil Foden-6
Looked more creative than he has done recently but still missing out on that magic he showed he's capable of.
AM - Nico O'Reilly-6
Barring a couple of chances in the first half had not much impact on the game before being taken off.
ST - Erling Haaland-6
Looked like he was missing his shooting boots with chance after chance being wasted. Holdup play was strong just needed that final finish
Man City Subs
AM Rayan Cherki-8
Made the biggest impact on the pitch when he came on. Created the most chances in the game, even when playing the last 25 minutes, and set up both City goals.
RB - Matheus Nunes-6
Made some overlapping runs and gave some energy to the hosts when they were chasing the game.
CM - Mateo Kovacic-6
Gave the midfield some more calmness when he came on. Helped keep Bournemouth penned back when trying to get City the win.
AM - Jack Grealish-NR
Only had 10 minutes on the pitch and didn't have much of an opportunity to run at the Bournemouth defence.
Bournemouth
GK - Djordje Petrovic-8
Was a brick wall for most of the game keeping Bournemouth's lead. Conceded late but couldn't do too much about the deflection.
RB - Adrien Truffert-7
Made 7 defensive contributions and did a good job keeping the flanks solid.
LB - Adam Smith-6
Played the Ball which led to the first Bournemouth goal. Did his job for the most part at the back.
CB - James Hill-6
A generally solid performance just couldn't hold on at the end.
CB - Antonio Silva-7
Mostly kept Haaland in check while also leading his team from the back.
CDM - Alex Scott-7
Kept his team moving while also doing that extra running when needed. Got stuck in defensively when without the ball too.
CDM - Lewis Cook-6
Did a lot running but wasn't able to get on the ball much to help Bournemouth hang on.
LM - Rayan-6
Helped make the goal but other than that was forced to create out of scraps
RM - Marcus Tavernier-8
Probably the most dangerous player on the pitch for the majority of the game. Got the goal but could've had more if it weren't for the City keeper.
AM - Justin Kluivert-7
Not many touches but kept the energy up. Had one shot saved but wasn't able to create much more.
ST - Evanilson-7
Pressed well from the front and set up the first goal of the game other than that didn't have much service to feed off.
Bournemouth Subs
CDM - Tyler Adams-5
Tried to keep the lead for the visitors but didn't impact the game from midfield.
CDM - Alex Toth-NR
Came on to see out the game but didn't really get the ball.
Forward - Daniel Jebbison- NR
Forward - Ben Gannon-Doak NR
Final Thoughts
The first game of the league season at least was a rebound from the Community Shield thrashing for City.
But there is a still a lot of room for improvement. Players will have to get used to their new roles and hopefully last year's golden boot winner Erling Haaland can start finding the net sooner rather than later. The most important thing is to start the campaign with the 3 points so on to the next game.
