Becoming one of the best centre backs in the world is a difficult task given how much pressure you are under. Especially in the Premier League, where all eyes are on you, one mistake could prove catastrophic.

Take Virgil van Dijk, for example, widely regarded as the best defender in the English top flight. The Liverpool captain has thrived throughout his time at Anfield but one error or poor performance and many question his standing among the greatest centre-backs in English football history.

Van Dijk didn't start his career in England and joined Southampton at the age of 24. Some benefit from arriving on English shores with experience abroad, while others impress from the grassroots level.

Here we look at four Premier League defensive prospects who have the potential to become superstars in years to come. The only rule is that the player must be under 21.

Jaydee Canvot

When Jaydee Canvot arrived at Crystal Palace back in the summer of 2025, he was expected to become Marc Guehi's long-term heir. The young Frenchman, 20, waited in the wings after Guehi missed out on a move to Liverpool.

Guehi eventually left for Manchester City in January and Canvot replaced him in Oliver Glasner's defence. He caught the eye with incredible displays, showing maturity beyond his years and proving to be a superb signing by the Eagles.

Canvot is tipped for an extremely bright future, and a place in France's defence is surely on the cards. He's pacey, technically gifted, physically capable, and adaptable to any system.

Luka Vuskovic

Brighton & Hove Albion look to have pulled off an absolute steal signing Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur for £50m. The Croatian youngster, 19, has already become a fan favourite at the Amex Stadium, immediately earning a starting berth in Fabian Hurzeler's backline.

Vuskovic enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Hamburg in 2025-26 and many were surprised Spurs didn't decide to put their faith in him. The Seagulls are benefitting and he looks the real deal, ready to explode and become the latest Croatian superstar.

If he maintains his red-hot start to life on the south coast, he'll undoubtedly be earning his place among Europe's best center backs. He's a towering defender at six-foot-four and often gets the better of attackers in the air.

Leny Yoro

There's a reason nearly every top European club were interested in signing Leny Yoro back in the summer of 2024. Fresh off the back of a sensational at LOSC Lille, he had Real Madrid reportedly viewing him as 'the Kylian Mbappe of defenders'.

Madrid conceded defeat to Manchester United in the race for Yoro, who headed to Old Trafford. He's biding his time as Michael Carrick prefers Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez as his center-back partnership.

It won't be long, though, until the 20-year-old takes a permanent place in the Red Devils' side. He showed incredible versatility in the summer, catching the eye as a makeshift right-back.

Marli Salmon

The youngest name on this list is Marli Salmon and at just 16 he is already backed to become one of Gabriel Magalhaes or William Saliba's successors. The latest Hale End academy product, like Max Dowman, looks primed for the first team and another generational talent.

Salmon has already earned four appearances at senior level and has been included in Mikel Arteta's first-team squad this season. He is a brilliant reader of the game, reliable in the air, and also capable of playing at right-back if required.

Veljko Milosavljevic

At the age of 19, Veljko Milosavljevic has already established himself as a Serbian international. He featured seven times in the Premier League last season and showed just why Bournemouth paid Red Star Belgrade £13m to bring him to the Vitality Stadium.

Milosavljevic is a modern centre-back whose ball-playing abilities have earned rave reviews. He's proven a nuisance to opposition attackers, constantly shutting them down and even helping to launch attacks.
