From Cristiano Ronaldo's extraordinary goalscoring record to Sergio Ramos' leadership, Real Madrid have made some of football's most influential signings. But which arrivals have had the biggest impact at the Bernabéu?

Real Madrid have built their reputation on attracting the biggest names in world football, with generations of elite players helping establish the Spanish giants as one of the most successful clubs in the game.

The Galácticos era brought some of the sport's most recognisable figures to the Spanish capital, while subsequent recruitment has delivered the foundations for multiple Champions League-winning sides. Some signings arrived as established superstars, while others developed into club legends after initially having to prove themselves.

Ranking the best arrivals is no easy task, particularly given the number of players who have contributed to Madrid's remarkable success. For this list, we are focusing on signings made since the 1990s, assessing each player's performances, longevity, silverware and overall influence at the club.

Here are the 10 best Real Madrid signings of that period, ranked.

11: Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham has already made a significant impression since joining Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund in 2023.

The England international enjoyed a sensational start to life in Spain, quickly becoming one of the team's most influential players and demonstrating an ability to deliver in decisive moments.

His performances have already put him among the club's most exciting recent arrivals, but his Madrid career is still developing.

Given the achievements and longevity of the players in the top 10, Bellingham narrowly misses out for now. However, if he continues on his current trajectory, it may only be a matter of time before he earns a place among the club's greatest signings.

10. Luis Figo (2000–2005)

Luis Figo's move from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000 remains one of the most controversial transfers in football history.

The Portuguese winger's decision to leave the Catalan club for their fiercest rivals sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with his arrival also marking the beginning of Florentino Pérez's Galácticos project.

However, Figo's legacy at the Bernabéu was about far more than the controversy surrounding his transfer. He quickly established himself as a key figure in Madrid's attack, bringing creativity, technical quality and experience to an already star-studded squad.

During his five years at the club, Figo won two LaLiga titles and the Champions League in 2002. His performances also earned him the Ballon d'Or in 2000, shortly before his move to Madrid.

His arrival helped set the tone for an era of superstar recruitment, making him a deserved inclusion in this ranking.

9. Zinedine Zidane (2001–2006)

Few players have combined elegance and effectiveness quite like Zinedine Zidane.

Real Madrid made the French midfielder one of the most expensive footballers in history when they signed him from Juventus in 2001, adding another world-class name to their growing collection of Galácticos.

Zidane's technical ability, close control and vision made him a joy to watch, but his influence was about more than aesthetics. He became an important figure in Madrid's midfield, helping the club win La Liga in 2003 and the Champions League in 2002.

His contribution to that European triumph remains particularly memorable. Zidane's stunning volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the final at Hampden Park is still regarded as one of the greatest goals in Champions League history.

Although his trophy haul was smaller than some of the players further up this list, Zidane's individual quality and defining moments ensure his place among Madrid's greatest signings.

8. Roberto Carlos (1996–2007)

Roberto Carlos helped redefine what supporters could expect from an attacking full-back.

The Brazilian arrived from Inter Milan in 1996 and spent 11 years at the Bernabéu, becoming one of the most recognisable players of his generation.

His explosive pace, powerful left foot and willingness to push forward made him a constant threat down Madrid's left flank. He was equally capable of delivering dangerous crosses, scoring spectacular free-kicks and stretching opposition defences with his overlapping runs.

Carlos was also a central part of one of the most successful periods in the club's history, winning four LaLiga titles and three Champions League trophies.

His attacking instincts made him a unique presence in the team, while his consistency over more than a decade cemented his reputation as one of the greatest left-backs to represent Real Madrid.

7. Toni Kroos (2014–2024)

Signing Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich for a reported £27million in 2014 proved to be one of Real Madrid's smartest pieces of business.

The German midfielder arrived shortly after winning the World Cup with Germany, but his achievements in the Spanish capital would far surpass what he had already accomplished at club level.

Kroos quickly became an integral part of Madrid's midfield, forming a formidable partnership with Luka Modrić and Casemiro. His passing range, composure and ability to dictate the tempo of matches made him one of the most reliable performers in the team.

He helped Madrid win four LaLiga titles and five Champions League trophies during his decade at the club, becoming a defining figure in their European dominance.

Kroos retired from professional football in 2024, bringing an end to an extraordinary spell in which he consistently delivered at the highest level.

For the fee Madrid paid, his arrival represents exceptional value.

6. Karim Benzema (2009–2023)

Karim Benzema's Real Madrid career is one of the strongest examples of a signing developing into a genuine club legend.

The French striker joined from Lyon in 2009 as a 21-year-old, initially sharing the spotlight with some of the biggest attacking names in world football.

As the years passed, however, Benzema became increasingly important to Madrid's success. His intelligent movement, link-up play and ability to bring teammates into the game made him much more than a traditional centre-forward.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo's departure in 2018, Benzema took on greater responsibility in front of goal and became the focal point of Madrid's attack.

His performances during the 2021/22 campaign were particularly outstanding, scoring 15 goals in the Champions League as Madrid lifted the trophy.

That season ultimately earned him the Ballon d'Or.

Benzema left in 2023 with 354 goals in 648 appearances, five Champions League titles and four LaLiga crowns. His 14-year spell in Spain firmly places him among the club's greatest-ever players.

5. Casemiro (2013–2022)

While Madrid's Galácticos were often associated with attacking flair and individual brilliance, Casemiro provided the balance that allowed their midfield to flourish.

The Brazilian joined the club from São Paulo in 2013 and initially had to work his way into the first team, including a loan spell at Porto.

His breakthrough came under Zinedine Zidane, with Casemiro establishing himself as the defensive anchor alongside Kroos and Modrić.

His ability to break up opposition attacks, win possession and protect the back four allowed his midfield partners to influence matches further forward. He was rarely the most glamorous player on the pitch, but his contribution was essential.

Casemiro won five Champions League titles and three LaLiga trophies during his time in Madrid, forming part of the midfield that secured three consecutive European Cups between 2016 and 2018.

His departure for Manchester United in 2022 marked the end of a hugely successful chapter, but his importance to Madrid's modern history should not be underestimated.

4. Luka Modrić (2012–2025)

When Luka Modrić arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, there were doubts about whether he would be able to make an immediate impact at the Bernabéu.

Indeed, a readers' poll conducted by Spanish publication Marca named him the worst signing of the season in LaLiga during his first few months at the club.

It is safe to say those early doubts did not age well.

Modrić went on to become one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, controlling games through his vision, passing and remarkable ability to escape pressure.

Alongside Kroos and Casemiro, he formed a midfield partnership that helped Madrid dominate European football for years.

His individual achievements were equally impressive. Modrić won the Ballon d'Or in 2018, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award since 2007.

Across his remarkable spell in Madrid, he won four LaLiga titles and six Champions League trophies, leaving the club in 2025 as one of its most decorated and respected players.

3. Sergio Ramos (2005–2021)

Sergio Ramos arrived at Real Madrid from Sevilla in 2005 as a teenager, but he would eventually become one of the most important figures in the club's modern history.

Madrid paid a reported £18.5million to secure his services, with the defender quickly establishing himself as a versatile and aggressive presence in the team.

Initially used at right-back, Ramos eventually moved into central defence, where his leadership, physicality and determination made him a cornerstone of the Madrid backline.

He was also far more than a conventional defender. Ramos scored 101 goals in 671 appearances for the club, regularly delivering important contributions at the other end of the pitch.

His most iconic moment came in the 2014 Champions League final against Atlético Madrid, when his stoppage-time header forced extra time and helped Madrid secure La Décima.

Ramos went on to win four Champions League titles and five LaLiga crowns, captaining the club through one of its most successful periods.

His influence, longevity and ability to deliver on the biggest occasions make him one of the finest signings Madrid have ever made.

2. Marcelo (2007–2022)

Replacing a player of Roberto Carlos' quality was never going to be straightforward, but Marcelo eventually made the left-back position his own at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian arrived from Fluminense in January 2007 as a teenager and gradually developed into one of the most technically gifted defenders in world football.

Marcelo's attacking instincts made him particularly dangerous. Comfortable carrying the ball into midfield, combining with forwards and creating opportunities, he often operated more like an additional playmaker than a traditional full-back.

His understanding with Cristiano Ronaldo was especially effective, with the pair forming a devastating partnership down Madrid's left side.

Marcelo also played a significant role in the club's sustained success, winning six LaLiga titles and five Champions League trophies during his time in Spain.

He eventually left in 2022 after 15 years at the Bernabéu, having established himself as one of the greatest left-backs of his generation.

His combination of technical ability, creativity and trophy-winning consistency makes him a worthy runner-up.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (2009–2018)

There can be little argument over who takes the top spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival from Manchester United in 2009 transformed Real Madrid's attacking output and helped usher in one of the most successful periods in the club's history.

Madrid broke the world transfer record to sign the Portuguese forward, who arrived after winning the Premier League, Champions League and Ballon d'Or at Old Trafford.

What followed was extraordinary.

Ronaldo scored 450 goals in just 438 appearances for Madrid, becoming the club's all-time leading goalscorer. His remarkable consistency in front of goal made him the central figure in an attack that repeatedly delivered on the biggest stages.

He won two LaLiga titles and four Champions League trophies with the Spanish giants, including three consecutive European triumphs between 2016 and 2018.

Ronaldo also claimed four Ballon d'Or awards during his time at the club, further underlining his individual dominance.

His goalscoring record, trophy haul and influence on Madrid's modern identity make him the standout signing of the period.
