When Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior snubbed Arsenal to sign a long term contract keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2032 back in August, it felt like a declaration of faith between player and club.

The 26-year-old was set to become a key cog of Madrid’s new era under Jose Mourinho. Fast forward three months, and that long-term commitment is already looking like a potential trap that will prove difficult to free away from.

With just one goal in 11 appearances, a toxic relationship with the Bernabeu crowd and a four-match La Liga suspension following a red card against Villarreal, Vinicius has hit his lowest point since his breakout 2021–22 campaign.

To make matters worse, Madrid have looked markedly better without him thanks to the electric form of summer signing Yan Diomande.

Striver.Football breaks down reasons why Vini Jr might quickly come to regret signing on the dotted line until 2032.

Yan Diomande’s impressive displays at left wing

The biggest threat to Vinicius is  the explosive rise of Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old Ivorian sensation, brought in from RB Leipzig in a deal that could reach €140 million (£116m), has taken full advantage of Vini’s absence.

Operating directly in Vinicius's preferred left-wing slot, Diomande has produced four goals and three assists in his last six games.

When Vini was pulled after 70 disappointing minutes against Leipzig in the Champions League, Diomande came off the bench to set up Kylian Mbappe and smash home a thunderous goal of his own.

If Diomande continues to deliver world-class outputs at a fraction of the friction, Vini's status as Madrid's primary transitional outlet is no longer guaranteed.

Real Madrid flow better without him

The most uncomfortable truth for Vinicius right now is the scoreboard during his suspension. Without the Brazilian in the lineup, Mourinho’s side has thrived  playing a faster, more fluid brand of football which saw them deliver positive results against Sevilla, Barcelona in El Clasico and Racing Santander.

Rather than relying on Vini to hold width and isolate defenders one v one, Madrid’s attack has become far less predictable.

Arda Guler has flourished in central build-up play, and the balance across the front line looks cleaner.

Difficult relationship with Bernabeu crowd

Player-fan fallouts at Real Madrid are nothing new, but Vini’s situation feels dangerously deep-rooted.
The whistling began last season amid contract uncertainty, team struggles, and rumors of a fractured relationship with former boss Xabi Alonso.

Instead of resetting the dynamic, his contract extension and recent red card for a hair-pull on Nathan Saliba have only heightened the tension.

Home supporters at the Bernabeu have booed him consistently this term. Committing your prime years through 2032 to a fanbase that has turned on you makes for a mentally draining environment, especially while navigating tough personal moments away from the pitch.

Gave up chance to be main man in the Premier League

By agreeing to stay in Madrid through 2032, Vini walked away from the chance to be the indisputable face of another elite European project.

Arsenal’s heavy interest in early August presented him a chance to move to the Premier League as the undisputed superstar and central figure of an ascending team.

At Madrid, Vini finds himself competing for the main man status alongside Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. Locking himself down long-term means accepting that he will always have to fight for headline status.

Mourinho’s system demands more defensive work

Jose Mourinho has publicly backed Vini Jr and according to The Athletic, he has tailored Valdebebas training routines to get the winger back to peak physical condition.

However, Jose has always valued players who obey his tactical instructions  tactical discipline, defensive work rate, and efficiency over reputation.

Vini’s costly giveaway against Roma, which directly led to Madrid falling 3–1 behind before a dramatic 4–3 comeback victory, is precisely the kind of error Mourinho detests.

If Diomande offers defensive discipline alongside direct goal threat, Mourinho won't hesitate to make cold-blooded selection calls.

Final Thoughts

Vinicius Junior possesses the generational talent to bounce back and rewrite this narrative. But with Yan Diomande rapidly evolving into a fan favorite and Real Madrid picking up momentum without him, that eight-year contract renewal might already be looking like a mistake.
