Robert Lewandowski has told AS that Real Madrid look stronger this season under Jose Mourinho after their perfect start to the league campaign. Asked about the team’s prospects following the summer changes, he gave a positive assessment.

“Real Madrid have become stronger now with the new signings and with Mourinho,” he said. He then made his position clear as a Barcelona player: “But I always stand alongside Barcelona.”

Lewandowski’s comments are notable given his four years at Barcelona and his current position outside both clubs. He left Camp Nou as a free agent this summer and signed a two-year deal with Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.

His assessment of Madrid, therefore, comes from a former Barcelona player now watching Spanish football from the outside.

Lewandowski’s departure was one of three changes to Barcelona’s forward line this summer. Marcus Rashford returned to Manchester United after his loan spell in Catalonia ended, while Ferran Torres was sold to Paris Saint-Germain.

All three had contributed regularly in front of goal last season, leaving Hansi Flick with a reshaped attack.

Asked whether the changes had weakened Barcelona’s attack, Lewandowski backed the club to adapt.

“Last season we scored 65 goals, but Barcelona knows how to work right to the end,” he said. Lewandowski also backed Barcelona to cope with the changes to their attack.

“This stage could be different for the team compared to last season, because it has many players of quality, in addition to new signings,” he said.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have both made changes this summer, but their situations are different. Madrid have made a perfect start, while Barcelona are still adjusting to the loss of three attacking players.

What Comes Next For Mourinho's Squad

Madrid’s next two fixtures will provide an early test. They travel to Real Betis, where they have not won in their last four league visits, before hosting Inter Milan on September 8 in their Champions League opener.

Mourinho will be without Arda Guler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva for that European fixture, with all three carrying suspensions into the new continental campaign. For now, Madrid supporters can take encouragement from Lewandowski’s comments.
