Rio Ferdinand didn't agree with the decision to send Leny Yoro off in Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

United showed improvement following a disappointing 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. They fell behind early though after poor defending allowed Pablo Barrios to open the scoring in the very first minute.

Atleti broke on the counter in the second half and Jonathan David went down under a challenge from Yoro. VAR advised Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg to review the incident on the pitchside monitor and he decided to send the Frenchman off.

Diego Simeone's men made the most of their one-man advantage and Ademola Lookman scored their second of the night. It was a wasteful showing from Michael Carrick's men whose disastrous start to the season continues.

Rio Ferdinand Fumes Over Leny Yoro Red Card

Yoro had been putting in a strong performance before his sending off which came in contentious fashion. He was adjuged to have pulled David to the ground although replays show he isn't putting much force on the Canadian striker.

Ferdinand hit out at Nyberg's decision with a post on X: "Never a red card. SOFT. Yoro should be proud of his performance tonight. Him + Martinez forming good partnership."

United suffered fourth defeat of the season across competitions but Carrick will feel his side were unfortunate due to Yoro's red card. They were also lively going forward but couldn't take their chances and question marks over their summer recruitment will only intensify.

Man Utd Defensive Problems Surface

INEOS opted to solely focus on a midfield rebuild in the summer following Casemiro's departure. They made three signings, bringing Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos to Old Trafford.

All three started at the Metropolitano tonight and Baleba has been a breath of fresh air since debuting against Tottenham off the bench. His physicality has made a noticeable difference in the middle of the park.

Defensively though, United are always vulnerable and one has to wonder why Carrick didn't insist on reinforcements at the back. Not only centrally but at left-back where Luke Shaw has no viable backup and tonight Ayden Heaven moved into a makeshift role to deal with the Englishman's latest injury setback.
