As Arsenal lead writer at Striver.Football, I spend plenty of time looking at the players who have helped shape this club’s history. From the legendary sides that dominated English football to the modern team competing for major honours, Arsenal have made some truly memorable signings over the years.

Picking just 10 is no easy task. Some transformed the club’s fortunes, others delivered unforgettable moments, and several helped define entire eras.

There are plenty of names worthy of recognition, but these are my 10 Arsenal signings that stand out the most. Narrowing it down to a top 10 was difficult enough, let alone trying to rank them, so they are presented in no particular order.

Alexis Sánchez

Alexis Sánchez joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2014 and quickly became one of the team’s most influential attackers. His relentless work rate, direct dribbling and eye for goal made him a constant threat, while his performances helped Arsenal win consecutive FA Cups in 2015 and 2017.

David Raya

David Raya initially joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford in 2023 before making the move permanent. His composure on the ball, distribution and shot-stopping have made him an important part of Mikel Arteta’s system, while his Golden Glove-winning performances have helped establish him among the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers. He has also been part of Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning success.

Declan Rice

Declan Rice arrived from West Ham United in 2023 for a club-record fee at the time, bringing leadership, athleticism and control to Arsenal’s midfield. His impact was immediate, and his dramatic late goals against Manchester United and Luton Town during his debut season showed his ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch. He has also played a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning success.

Dennis Bergkamp

Dennis Bergkamp’s arrival from Inter Milan in 1995 transformed Arsenal’s attacking play. Renowned for his extraordinary touch, vision and creativity, the Dutchman became one of the most technically gifted players ever to wear the shirt and played a central role in the club’s success under Arsène Wenger.

Freddie Ljungberg

Freddie Ljungberg signed for Arsenal from Halmstads BK in 1998 and became a key figure during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. The Swedish midfielder combined intelligent movement with an eye for important goals, including his strike in the 2002 FA Cup final, and was part of the Invincibles squad.

Gabriel Magalhães

Signed from Lille in 2020, Gabriel Magalhães has developed into a cornerstone of Arsenal’s defence. His strength, aerial ability and aggression have made him a formidable centre-back, while his threat from set-pieces has added another dimension to Arsenal’s attacking game.

Ian Wright

Ian Wright arrived from Crystal Palace in 1991 and quickly became one of Arsenal’s most beloved forwards. His goals, infectious personality and connection with supporters made him a club icon, and he became Arsenal’s record goalscorer before Thierry Henry eventually surpassed his tally.

Patrick Vieira

Signed from AC Milan in 1996, Patrick Vieira became the heartbeat of Arsenal’s midfield. His leadership, physicality and technical quality helped define Arsène Wenger’s greatest teams, with the Frenchman captaining the Invincibles side that went unbeaten throughout the 2003/04 Premier League season.

Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Arsenal in 2001 was one of the most controversial transfers in English football. The centre-back quickly justified the move with commanding defensive performances, playing a crucial role in Arsenal’s title-winning sides and scoring in the 2006 Champions League final.

Thierry Henry

Signed from Juventus in 1999, Thierry Henry became Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the greatest players in Premier League history. His pace, finishing and ability to produce moments of brilliance made him the face of Arsenal’s most successful modern era, including the unforgettable Invincibles campaign.

Honourable mentions

William Saliba – The French defender has become one of Arsenal’s most important players, bringing composure, strength and consistency to the heart of the defence.

Robert Pirès – A key part of Arsenal’s successful early-2000s sides, Pirès offered creativity, intelligent movement and goals from midfield, becoming a vital member of the Invincibles squad.

Cesc Fàbregas – Having joined Arsenal as a teenager from Barcelona, Fàbregas developed into a gifted playmaker and captain, providing creativity and vision during a transitional period for the club.

Jens Lehmann – Arsenal’s goalkeeper during the Invincibles season, Lehmann played an important role in the club’s unbeaten Premier League campaign and produced several crucial performances along the way.
