Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has provided clarification for the Coventry City faithful after he celebrated scoring against them on Monday night.

The 29-year-old was on the score sheet as Spurs picked up their first Premier League win of the 2026-27 season by a 3-1 scoreline, rising up to 16th in the league.

Maddison celebrated scoring in his first competitive start for nearly two years by kissing the Tottenham badge against his boyhood club, and has offered an explanation for his actions.

Clearing the Air: Maddison's Heartwarming Message to Coventry Fans

James Maddison was included in Roberto De Zerbi's XI as the Italian tactician sought to engineer a first Premier League win of the campaign.

The England international responded emphatically, showing that he has not lost his impressive ball-striking with a fine effort from outside the box to open the scoring after just 14 minutes.

He wheeled away in celebration after his goal before performing his trademark darts celebration, and then he took it one step further by kissing the Tottenham badge, a gesture that sparked immediate debate among supporters given his deep, well-documented ties to Coventry City.

Recognizing that some fans might question the timing, Maddison took to social media to issue a heartfelt clarification, reaffirming his enduring love for the Sky Blues while dedicating his celebration to all at Tottenham who supported his recovery.

"I had already planned my first goal back I was kissing the badge of this club who has supported me and my family through the darkest days of my career over the past 18 months, he wrote.

I absolutely adore and love Coventry City. All my close friends and family know that. I’m a fan and always will be and I will 100% apologise to anyone who thought the timing was bad as my first goal back just happened to be against my hometown club. Good luck to Frank and the boys for the rest of the season. PUSB."

Despite an equaliser from Jack Rudoni, further goals from Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies ensured that Coventry City left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium empty-handed.

The Emotional Road Back: Maddison's Dream Goal and 18-Month Ordeal

James Maddison suffered one of the worst possible injuries to a footballer in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United ahead of the 2025-26 season in South Korea.

He had previously sustained an injury to the same knee at the end of the 2024-25 season, causing him to miss the UEFA Europa League final victory over Manchester United.

His long road back to fitness began immediately, and he only returned to action for the club in May 2026, nine months after he sustained the injury.

The game against Coventry City was only his ninth game back and first start since August 2025, and he was so overcome by the joy of scoring that he celebrated against his hometown club.

The first 42 professional games of Maddison's career came in the colours of Coventry, and he scored five goals for the club before he made his way up the ladder to become a Premier League star and an England international.
