Zambia's Copper Queens were eliminated from Group C of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in heartbreaking fashion. 

Despite finishing on six points with eight goals scored and a +6 goal difference, Zambia were eliminated after CAF's head-to-head tiebreaker rule sent Malawi and Nigeria into the quarter-finals.

Why Zambia Were Eliminated: CAF's Head-to-Head Rule Explained

Under CAF's Article 71.2 regulations, when teams finish level on points, overall group goal difference is ignored. Instead, a virtual "mini-league" is formed at the end of all group action, looking only at matches between the tied teams.

Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia all finished with six points and identical zero goal differences in their head-to-head fixtures.

The next tiebreaker (goals scored strictly within the mini-league) eliminated Zambia. Malawi led with four goals, Nigeria had three, and Zambia had only two. 

Zambia Make Unwanted WAFCON History

The Copper Queens became the first team in WAFCON history to finish the group stage with six points, score the most goals in their group (eight), and still fail to qualify. 

Their massive 6-0 opening-day demolition of Egypt ultimately meant nothing under the head-to-head rules.

Malawi Top Group C in Historic Fashion

Tournament debutants Malawi booked an incredible, historic ticket to the quarter-finals. Despite losing 2-1 to Zambia in their final match, Tabitha Chawinga's crucial 72nd-minute consolation goal was the exact strike that gave Malawi four mini-league goals, saving their campaign and winning them the group. 

Nigeria Recover to Reach the Quarter-Finals

Defending champions Nigeria rebounded spectacularly from their shocking opening-day loss to Malawi. 

The Super Falcons handled their business with a commanding 6-2 win over Egypt on Day 11, ensuring they secured the goals needed to slide through the mini-league tiebreaker into the last eight. 

What Zambia's Exit Means for World Cup Qualification

Because WAFCON 2026 doubles as the official African qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, the semi-finalists receive automatic tickets.

11 – Total goals scored across just two matches on Day 11.
