The promotion picture in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 is already beginning to take shape.

Just two weekends into the new campaign, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Leicester City have all made strong starts, while several sides are still searching for their first victory.

With six fixtures now complete, Matchweek 2 has provided another early glimpse of which teams could be ready to challenge at the top of the table.

Newcastle continue their strong start

Newcastle United are quickly establishing themselves as one of the early promotion contenders.

The Magpies followed their opening-day victory over Wolves with a 1-0 win away to Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

It means Tanya Oxtoby's side have taken maximum points from their opening two matches without conceding a goal.

After strengthening their squad during the summer, Newcastle arrived into the campaign with promotion expectations, and their opening two results have done little to dampen those ambitions.

For Bristol City, however, it was another frustrating afternoon after their 4-1 defeat to Sunderland on the opening weekend.

The Robins will now be looking for a response as they attempt to keep pace with the early leaders.

Sunderland keep rolling

Sunderland have arguably made the biggest statement of the opening two weekends.

After putting four past Bristol City last Sunday, the Black Cats followed it up with a 2-1 victory away at Burnley.

That gives Sunderland two wins from two and nine goals scored already.

Their attacking start is particularly eye-catching, but the bigger picture is even more encouraging for Mel Reay's side.

Sunderland have immediately put themselves into the conversation at the top of the BWSL2 and will be hoping this early momentum can develop into a genuine promotion challenge.

Leicester make it two from two

Leicester City are another team with a perfect record.

The Foxes followed their opening-day 1-0 victory over Sheffield United with a 4-2 win against Durham at the King Power Stadium.

Having been relegated from the BWSL last season, Leicester have made their desire for an immediate return clear.

Two wins from two is exactly the start they would have wanted.

There is still a long way to go, but Leicester are already sitting among the sides putting early pressure on the promotion places.

Wolves respond in style

Wolves suffered a difficult opening weekend against Newcastle, but they responded emphatically.

A 3-1 victory over Sheffield United gave the newly promoted side their first points of the campaign.

After being unable to create enough against Newcastle, Wolves found their attacking rhythm this time around and will take plenty of confidence from the result.

For Sheffield United, however, it is a second defeat in two matches after their narrow loss to Leicester on the opening weekend.

Forest and Watford share four goals

Nottingham Forest and Watford played out another entertaining draw, with the sides sharing four goals in a 2-2 result at the City Ground.

Forest have now drawn both of their opening games after being denied victory by a late Ipswich equaliser last weekend.

For Watford, meanwhile, it is a second consecutive draw following their goalless opening-day meeting with Burnley.

Neither side has found that first victory yet, but both have shown enough to suggest they could be competitive as the season develops.

Southampton and Ipswich play out another draw

Southampton were also held to a draw as Ipswich Town secured a valuable point in a 0-0 stalemate.

The Saints had impressed in their opening-day victory over Durham and would have wanted to build on that result.

Instead, Ipswich managed to keep them out and claim their second point of the campaign.

After rescuing a late draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend, Ipswich have now begun the season unbeaten.

The promotion race is already intriguing

It may only be two games into the campaign, but the early promotion picture is starting to become clearer.

Sunderland, Newcastle and Leicester have all taken six points from their opening two matches, giving them the strongest possible start.

Southampton remain within touching distance after their opening-day victory, while Wolves have responded to their first defeat with an important three points.

At the other end, Bristol City and Sheffield United are still searching for their first points, while Forest, Watford and Ipswich have all begun with consecutive draws.

The season is still in its infancy, but WSL2 is already showing signs of becoming a fascinating promotion battle.
