From tough beginnings to representing Brazil at the World Cup, Igor Thiago's journey showcases drive, belief and overcoming difficult situations.
Born in Gama, Brazil, Igor Thiago has been one of the Premier League's most impressive goal scorers, but that has all come from the toughest moments of his life as a teenager.
When the striker was 13 years of age, his father passed away which would be difficult for anyone in a similar situation.
But for Thiago, it meant that he had to work several jobs at a young age to support his family which included being a bricklayer and a fruit market porter.
It was his brother who would be the footballer of the family where the 15-year-old at the time started playing for amateur side Gremio Ocidental.
Tough beginnings lead to a promising start
Thiago joined Vere FC where he started to play at a regional level in Parana, proving himself that he could be a better player.
He caught the attention of Cruzeiro, a team who were in the second division of Brazilian football.
At 18 years old, Thiago made his professional debut and would go on to score 10 goals in 64 matches for the club.
On 2nd March 2022, Europe gained interest in the Brazilian forward as Thiago signed for Bulgarian side, Ludogorets Razgrad.
Trophy success had already started for the Gama-born player as he scored in a penalty shootout to help beat Levski Sofia and win the 2022 Bulgarian Supercup.
He scored 15 goals in 32 appearances for The Eagles, helping Ludogorets win the league title in the 2022/23 season, as well as triumphing in the Bulgarian Cup.
Consistent drive to succeed
After a successful season in Bulgaria, it wasn't long until Thiago moved elsewhere, signing with Club Brugge for a transfer fee of £6.8 million.
This would mean tougher competition for the striker as he was involved in multiple competitive tournaments, but determination to succeed would be the key value for the Brazilian.
In his one-year stint with the Belgian side, Thiago scored 18 goals in 34 league games as he won the Belgian Pro League with Club Brugge and helped the team get as far as the semi-finals in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
At age 22, Thiago would gain even more motivation to become a superstar in football after he was named as 2023/24 Young Player of the Season in the Europa Conference League, scoring seven goals in the tournament.
This would mean a lot to the Brazil forward things would continue to go up in his career, while being seen as a stand-out performer.
At no surprise, in 2024, Thiago signed for Brentford for an undisclosed fee which gave him the opportunity to play in one of the most-watched leagues in football.
Injuries, Setbacks And A Remarkable Comeback
Thiago made his debut for Brentford in a friendly match, starting off as a disaster when he suffered a meniscus injury which forced him out of action for almost the remainder of the year.
In November 2024, the Premier League debut eventually happened as The Bees' number nine came on as a substitute against Everton which ended in a 0-0 draw.
After sustaining a knee injury, Thiago wouldn't gain any minutes for Brentford on the pitch for 147 days until near the end of the season where he made his return as a substitute in a 4-3 home victory against Manchester United.
With no goals scored in the 2024/25 season, and both reliable goal scorers Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo departing from the club, it meant Thiago had to step up the following season to aid Brentford with balls in the back of the net.
While the pressure was on for the Brazilian, he did no disappoint scoring 25 goals in all competitions for Brentford, helping them finish just outside a European spot in ninth.
During the 2025/26 season, Thiago was called up to the Brazilian national team, making his debut in March as a substitute against France, before scoring his first goal for his country in the following match against Croatia in a 3-1 win.
After finishing the season as the Premier League's second-highest top scorer, Thiago received one of the greatest opportunities a footballer could have, playing for their country in the FIFA World Cup.
