Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry has completed a loan move to Portuguese outfit Sporting Club for the 2026-27 season.
The England U-19 international will play in Portugal after breaking out at Stamford Bridge in the 2025-26 season, according to a report from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Chelsea Reward Jesse Derry With New Long-Term Contract
The Blues have signed Derry to a new, long-term deal before allowing him to leave on loan, warding off interest from several clubs around Europe.
Derry joined Chelsea on a four-year contract last summer from Crystal Palace and immediately became a key player for the youth team.
He featured prominently for the U-21 and U-19 sides, working his way up to first-team football within a year of signing for the club.
Keen to avoid losing the youngster to any of the circling clubs, including Bayern Munich, Chelsea have decided to tie him down to an improved contract before allowing him to head out on a temporary basis.
Why Chelsea Chose Sporting CP For Derry's Development
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has sanctioned Derry's loan move to Sporting Club to enable the 19-year-old feature regularly.
Jesse Derry was handed his senior Chelsea debut last season by Liam Rosenior, and handled himself very well every time he was called upon.
Alonso is keen to see the youngster continue with his development, hence the decision to let him leave on a straight loan until the summer of 2027.
Chelsea have not included a buy option in the deal, and they will continue to pay 100% of the wages of the youngster while he plays in Portugal.
This signals that the Blues are only keen on his development and do not plan on letting him leave the club even after his loan spell in Lisbon.
How Sporting Fits Derry's Development
Chelsea have chosen to use up one of their international loan spots for Derry because of the promise he showed in the 2025-26 season.
He scored six goals and provided three assists in 18 PL 2 games as the Blues won the league title in style.
He also featured prominently in the UEFA Youth League, scoring five goals in only eight games in the competition.
He was handed his first senior start in the final weeks of the season in a Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, and was a cut above the rest before a head injury cut his game short.
Sporting has a track record for developing young wingers over the years, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, and Ricardo Quaresma all coming through their system.
More recently, Chelsea shelled out over £40 million to sign 18-year-old Geovany Quenda after he impressed at the Portuguese club.
Sporting are a regular side in European competition and compete at the top end of the Portuguese Primeira Liga, making them a good test for Derry.
The youngster will play for a side that constantly looks to be on the front foot, allowing him to sharpen his skills and play to his strengths.
Chelsea boss Alonso deems Derry to be too good for youth football but just a bit raw to be handed a first-team role at Stamford Bridge.
A year in Portugal will do a world of good for the youngster, potentially allowing him to return as a certified first-team star next summer.
