DR Congo recently ended their 52-year wait for World Cup qualification through sheer tactical discipline, aerial dominance and a veteran core whose experience helped get them over the line during the playoffs against Nigeria and Jamaica respectively.

However, head coach Sebastian Desabre knows that there still has to be a succession plan for his players most of whom might be experiencing their first and last World Cups. Although 23 of the 26 man squad are aged 24 and above, there was still room to call up some exciting youngsters who could carry the torch onto the next cycle for DR Congo.

Striver.Football broke down these three breakout 21-year-olds are ready to completely unlock DR Congo's tactical ceiling.

Position: Central Midfield
Age: 21 (Born November 2004)
The Profile: Mukau is a towering, absolute powerhouse of a midfielder who has rapidly evolved under the bright lights of Ligue 1 with Lille.

Standing at 1.88m, his physical presence is matched by a spectacular ability to progress the ball through tight central zones. Dubbed by some youth scouts as a prospective "nouveau Pogba," Mukau rocketed into global prominence after netting a brilliant Champions League brace against Bologna back in the 2024/2025 season.

He covers vast ground, breaks up opposition transitions effortlessly, and boasts clean first-touch security under intense pressure.

While the senior Ivorian and Congolese midfields have historically relied on pure defensive destroyers, Mukau provides a modern, box-to-box blueprint.

He gives Desabre an elite physical engine who can seamlessly transition the Leopards from deep defense into rapid, vertical counter-attacks.

Position: Defensive Midfield / Right-Back
Age: 21 (Born December 2004)
The Profile: Sadiki originally came through RSC Anderlecht’s world-renowned youth pipeline, and took the Belgium Pro League with Union SG by storm before sealing a €20 million move to Premier League side Sunderland.

Sadiki is a versatile, intelligent defensive player. He is capable of scanning the pitch before receiving the ball, a range of positional flexibility and that innate ability to execute line breaking passes that can unlock low blocks from deep.

Sadiki is capable of playing in midfield, as well as slot into right back if needed. His press-resistant composure will ensure DR Congo are capable of reliably retaining possession against teams that are aggressive on the press.

Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 21 (Born January 2005)
The Profile: Most times, goalkeepers at the age of 21 tend not to command the first choice spot at historic European clubs, but Epolo is defying that narrative.

Having come through the ranks at Standard Liege, he caught the attention of global audiences by keeping six clean sheets in his first eight professional appearances in the Belgian top flight.

Epolo relies on strong reflexes and strong ability to come for aerial balls, as well as the ability to use his feet to aid build up play from the back.

While teams are becoming more ball dominant, Epolo could represent the long-term future in goal, even if he might not necessarily go into this tournament as first choice goalkeeper ahead of Lionel Mpasi of Le Havre.

Having formally completed his FIFA switch from Belgium to DR Congo before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco,  he provides the tournament-ready shot-stopping security required to survive at the absolute highest level.

A New Era For The Leopards

DR Congo's historic footballing identity was built on raw power and emotional resilience. But the squad approaching the 2026 World Cup is already going through a period of transition.

Having now secured a return to the highest level of football, these three players represent a changing of the guard by  constructing a modern engine tailored to shock the globe.
