Chelsea's academy continues to produce promising talent, with several youngsters taking steps towards first-team football ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The Blues have now officially secured teenage sensation Jashayde Greenwood on his first professional deal after he turned 17 last week.
The milestone comes after the youngster enjoyed a blistering pre-season, and he could play a significant role in the season ahead.
How Jashayde Greenwood Made an Immediate Impact at Chelsea
Jashayde Greenwood joined Chelsea from Wolverhampton Wanderers last October after the Blues recruited him from the Wolves academy.
He had already played in the U18 Premier League as a schoolboy for Wolves, scoring once in seven appearances in the 2024-25 season.
He was drafted into Chelsea's U-18 team after his arrival as a 16-year-old to bolster their attack. He shared attacking responsibilities with Chizaram Ezenwata, helping the Blues to win the Southern and National U-18 Premier League titles.
Greenwood registered a goal in every 82 minutes of action in the U-18 Premier League last season.
In total, he scored nine goals in 23 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea's youth set-up.
Greenwood showed significant quality and maturity on and off the pitch during his first season with the young Blues.
His technical sharpness, spatial awareness, and goalscoring instincts ensured that he had a memorable first year at Cobham.
Moving from scholarship terms to a professional contract reflects Chelsea's high regard for his potential and keenness to keep him on their books.
Greenwood’s Pre-Season Explosion Strengthens His Chelsea Pathway
This summer, Jashayde Greenwood has taken his performance up a notch in preparation for the 2026-27 season with the academy.
The youngster featured for the U18s in a pre-season friendly against Bournemouth and tore through the opposition.
The young Blues were 4-1 down at half-time before Greenwood inspired a remarkable 7-5 comeback.
The 17-year-old was at the PSV Otten Cup with the likes of Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Tayo Subuloye, and Reggie Watson, and was a star for Chelsea.
He played out wide on the left and ended the first day of the tournament as its leading scorer with three goals in two games against Benfica and Monaco.
What Comes Next for Greenwood at Chelsea
An England U-16 international, Greenwood will benefit from the success of Chelsea's youth teams in the 2025-26 season.
With Jesse Derry, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, and Shumaira Mheuka moving into new stages of their development, he could get opportunities across multiple age groups.
He could become the starting striker for Dan Hogan's U-18s while Ezenwata replaces Mheuka in the U-21 team.
He will also be an option centrally and out wide in the UEFA Youth League with the U-19s.
Chelsea could gradually integrate him into the U21 setup that plays in the Premier League 2. There, he will come up against more physical, older opposition.
What Young Players Can Learn From Greenwood’s Development
Jashayde Greenwood has lived up to expectations since moving to Chelsea last October, and his progression shows young players how consistency can create opportunities.
Also, young players must be prepared to perform whenever opportunities come their way, as Greenwood has done throughout the summer.
His performances have moved him towards the front of the queue among Chelsea's U18 strikers at the club with his impressive goalscoring numbers in pre-season.
Young players must also be flexible with their positioning and develop abilities beyond their primary position.
Despite being a striker, Greenwood has showcased excellent close control and dribbling, enabling him to feature as a winger. This position has suited him, as he is able to combine his goalscoring ability with his ability to beat his man.
