Highly talented Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel made his first-team debut for Manchester United in a friendly against Atletico Madrid. The Red Devils beat the Spanish giants 2-1 with an Mbeumo brace.

Who Is JJ Gabriel? Manchester United's 15-Year-Old Wonderkid

JJ Gabriel had a prolific season during the 2025-26 with Manchester United U18's. Gabriel netted a staggering 29 times while playing much above his age group. This has sparked interest from the biggest clubs in Europe, such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

He has yet to sign his scholarship, but with one more season until he is eligible, the Red Devils will do everything in their power to retain the highly talented youngster.

How Manchester United's Pre-Season Tour Led To Gabriel's Debut

Gabriel was selected as part of Carrick's squad to travel to Sweden to face Rosenborg, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite United putting five past the 26-time Norwegian top-flight champions, Gabriel remained on the bench. However, his chance came with 10 minutes left against Atletico as he replaced match-winner Mbeumo.

Michael Carrick Reacts To JJ Gabriel's Senior Debut

The 15-year-old showed promise, and manager Carrick spoke out on the positives from the game.

When speaking to MUFC after the game, Carrick said: "I think collectively we look strong as a team, which is always the most important thing. Pretty much throughout the team, I think there were really good performances.

He added: "And again, seeing the young players coming on and having an impact, and Jimmy [Thwaites] and JJ coming on at the end, they are two younger players, again, [who get] their first kind of taste for it, for us, so it's great for us to be in a position for me to give them opportunities to the boys.

"And then on top of that, touch wood, no injuries. You know, it's always [about] getting the balance of how much do we push the players and how much do we save? At the moment, the boys are in a really good place."

Manchester United Fans Excited By JJ Gabriel's First-Team Introduction

Comments under United's post praised various players, but Mount, Lacey and JJ Gabriel were the main focus of praise after the 2-1 win.

Many United fans were pleased to see the inclusion of young players such as Lacey, JJ Gabriel, Jim Thwaites, Ethan Williams, Harry Amass and Jack Fletcher whilst new signing Andrey Santos played 80 minutes.

What's next for Gabriel?

JJ Gabriel has a long future ahead of him, but in the short term, there are still three friendlies that he will look to be a part of. A week of rest lies ahead for the touring Red Devils before three games in a week lead the club into the Premier League season.

United face PSG on Saturday 8th August before Leeds on Wednesday 12th, and their last friendly sees them face AC Milan. A week of rest will be in store for the players before their Premier League campaign starts in just under 3 weeks.

Gabriel will likely remain in the U18s but he could make his competitive debut this season, so Manchester United fans could see a debutant from the academy in the coming months.
