The pathway from African academies to European clubs continues to create opportunities for emerging talents, with clubs increasingly assessing prospects through trials and scouting.

Premier League side Ipswich Town have assessed Senegalese teenager Serigne Afia Ndao after he trained with the club's academy.

The 16-year-old Be Sport Academy prospect has also spent time at Crystal Palace, and reportedly caught the attention of Ipswich Town's coaching staff with his ball control, height and physical presence.

The centre-back is reportedly being monitored by several clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia, but his future will remain formally unresolved until he turns 18.

Who is Serigne Afia Ndao?

Born in December 2009, Serigne Afia Ndao is a highly-rated prospect from Senegal, who has been likened to Real Madrid star Ibrahima Konate.

The youngster is regarded as a complete and dominant centre-back due to the combination of skills that he possesses.

He has an outstanding physical profile and a great deal of room to further develop his game. His pace also stands out, enabling him to keep up with opponents and deal with transitions.

A proactive defender, he steps up early to engage opponents before they reach his defensive third, and is comfortable defending wide spaces, allowing him to play in a three-man backline.

On the ball, he displays a willingness and ability to break lines with clear, precise passes, and provides solid and confident distribution in the build-up phase.

Developed at Dakar’s renowned Be Sport Academy, the young central defender earned high praise from Ipswich Under-18 coach Mark Robinson for his height, physical presence, and composure in possession.

The teenager is in line to represent Senegal at the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year, and will be closely monitored by his many suitors throughout the tournament.

Why Ipswich Town Cannot Sign Serigne Afia Ndao Yet

Despite the strong impression made during his time in Suffolk, Ipswich Town fans will have to wait before seeing Ndao potentially line up for the senior team as the club cannot officially sign the young defender.

Under post-Brexit FIFA and FA transfer regulations, UK clubs are prohibited from signing overseas players under the age of 18.

With Ndao turning 17 in December 2026, an international move to England would generally remain subject to FIFA's rules on the international registration of minors until he turns 18 in December 2027.

The Tractor Boys could face competition for the youngster, with Newcastle United, Wolves, Burnley, Benfica and Al-Qadsiah reportedly monitoring him.

Ndao is expected to return to his club in Dakar as he continues preparing for the U17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.

A strong tournament could further increase interest in the young defender from clubs monitoring his progress.
