In recent years, England under Gareth Southgate went from a team regularly expected to disappoint, to one that nearly reached the summit on a number of ocassions.

They made the 2018 World Cup semis, and back to back European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024. After that, Southgate stepped down, paving the way for Tomas Tuchel to take charge of the side after Lee Carsely managed to see them through on an interim basis from July to December of 2024.

Tasked with guiding England through a high-stakes 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, Tuchel has aggressively shaken up the ranks as he tries to take the football-holic country to the next level.

Bypassing several familiar names such as Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, Tuchel's official 26-man roster includes a hungry, specialised crop of young tournament debutants. Striver.Football breaks down five of the side’s young players ready to help them end 60 years of hurt and bring football “back home”.

5. Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

IMAGO

Age: 23
Position: Attacking Midfielder / Winger
Style: Rogers is a physically imposing ball-carrier who has taken the Premier League by storm under Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

Now linked with a move to Premier League champions Arsenal, Rogers possesses a rare blend of towering size and smooth agility,  excelling at receiving the ball in the half-spaces, turning under heavy pressure, and aggressively driving directly at central defensive blocks to collapse them.

This enables him to play in four positions (both flanks, attacking midfield and false number nine) all at a high level.

Rogers, who will be going to his first ever major tournament with England, provides Tuchel with a valuable vertical presence.

When opposing defensive lines sit deep to suffocate Harry Kane, Rogers’ unique ability to power through central lines of pressure might give England an explosive interior threat they have historically lacked in tight knockout encounters.

He will be expected to start ahead of Jude Bellingham (22) in the number 10 role, given Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon will likely get the nod on the left wing.

4. Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen)

IMAGO

Age: 23
Position: Center-Back
Style: Quansah is a composed, elegant, modern ball-playing defender whose elite development has taken a massive leap forward since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Liverpool in 2025.

Quansah pairs aerial dominance with ice-cold composure when building out from the back. According to DataMB, he sits in elite percentiles for progressive passing distance and sweeping cross-field switches.

With Tuchel opting to leave veterans like Harry Maguire at home, Quansah’s integration is a massive tactical upgrade. Expected to compete for center back slots against Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones and Dan Burn, Quansah’s qualities will allow England to compress the pitch and play an aggressive high line.

His absolute comfort in high-line possession means the Three Lions can reliably bypass the first phase of an opponent's press.

3. Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United)

IMAGO

Age: 21
Position: Central Midfield
Style: The ultimate press-resistant prodigy. Mainoo, who actually started in their 2-1 loss to Spain in the final of Euro 2024, operates with an astonishingly low center of gravity and a mature scanning rhythm that belies his youth.

Mainoo uses subtle body feints and crisp, short-range geometry to completely eliminate opposing midfield lines before initiating transitions.

After a difficult spell under Ruben Amorim, Michael Carrick’s appointment as Man United manager has allowed him to return to the form he showed in the second half of the 2023/2024 season.

While England’s engine room will still rely on Declan Rice and Eliot Anderson (more on him later), Mainoo will introduce fluid transition mechanics.

Having earned back his spot for club and country, he represents the tactical link required to keep England ball-dominant against elite, high-pressing midfields.

2. Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest)

IMAGO

Age: 23
Position: Central / Attacking Midfield
Style: Eliot Anderson’s rise at Nottingham Forest caught the eye of Tomas Tuchel, who has made him integral to his plans since being appointed England manager.

Anderson is a high-intensity box-to-box engine who plays with an incredibly aggressive edge. Capable of effective counter-pressing, he also boasts creative intelligence that allows him to arrive late into the penalty box to finish off high-value transitions.

Fresh off conquering the U21 Euros in 2025, Anderson racked up highly impressive domestic numbers, he serves as England's high-intensity insurance policy.

1. Nico O'Reilly (Manchester City)

IMAGO

Age: 21
Position: Left back / Central Midfield
Style: Nico O'Reilly has enjoyed a tremendous season in the Premier League this season, which resulted in him earning the division’s young player of the season.

A natural playmaker, O’Reilly is also disguised in a tall athlete's frame. He possesses exquisite spatial awareness, operating flawlessly between the opponent's defensive and midfield lines while executing defense-splitting final balls with absolute precision.

He is also very good in the air, as seen during his Carabao Cup heroics last March during their 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Handed the iconic No. 3 shirt for his maiden senior tournament bow, O'Reilly will be key for England. As a left back, he will offer the Three Lions creativity inverting and overlapping which will give them something different.

Given their struggles unlocking lowblocks, O’Reilly’s qualities will also help them break down stubborn defences, especially as the tournament progresses under the extreme heat which will force teams to adopt a conservative approach to conserve energy levels.

Parting Shot

By surrounding established world-class figures with the youthful vibrance of Rogers, Mainoo, and O'Reilly, England can dare be excited for a blockbuster next four weeks.
