The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has wasted no time in delivering history. From ageless superstars and famous football bloodlines to long-suffering nations finally finding redemption and champions flexing their dominance, this year’s tournament is already rewriting the AFCON record books.

Here are five remarkable records broken at the ongoing AFCON 2025.

Gabon may have already exited AFCON 2025 with a game to spare, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang certainly left a mark.

At 36 years and six months, the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward became the second oldest goalscorer in AFCON history, behind Egypt legend Hossam Hassan, who scored at 39 years and five months.

Aubameyang scored both goals for Gabon during their dramatic 3-2 defeat to Mozambique, rolling back the years with a clinical display.

Luca Zidane is cementing his own legacy, away from his father’s enormous one.

The Algeria keeper became the first shot-stopper representing the nation to keep two clean sheets in his first two AFCON appearances since Mohamed Haniched in 1996.

His father, Zinedine, will certainly be proud. He has watched both Algeria’s games against Sudan and Burkina Faso from the stands.

It was a symbolic passing of generations on Africa’s biggest football stage.

Mozambique ended years of frustration when they stuned Gabon 3-2 in their second AFCON 2025 clash on Sunday.

It became their first win at the AFCON stage, having played 16 games at the tournament without victory. They had recorded four draws and 12 defeats before.

To put it into more context, they have taken part in six AFCONs since their debut 1986 showdown. They had gone winless in all the games they took part in.

If everything goes in their favor in their final game against Ivory Coast later this week, they also could be ending their duck by making the round of 16 stage for the first time ecer.

Senegal made history by delivering one of the most statistically dominant attacking performances in AFCON history during their 3-0 win over Botswana.

The 2021 AFCON champions delivered a staggering 17 shots on target and delivered nine big chances. These are the highest totals ever recorded since Opta began tracking detailed AFCON data in 2010 during a single game.

Sadio Mane himself recorded six shots on target, the most by any player on record during a single match at the AFCON stage as well.

It has not been just players making history. Abdou Abdel Mefire, also known as Mefire Abdou Abdoul, became the youngest head referee ever appointed at an AFCON tournament, at just 29 years old.

The Cameroonian star has been trusted with high-profile fixtures already, including the Morocco vs Mali clash.

His inclusion was officially confirmed in CAF’s AFCON 2025 match officials list.

From Aubameyang defying time, to Luca Zidane writing a new Algerian chapter, Mozambique finally escaping decades of heartbreak and Senegal setting frightening attacking benchmarks, AFCON 2025 is already shaping up as one of the most record-breaking editions in tournament history.

And with plenty of football still to come in Morocco, the sense remains that the record books may not be finished yet.
