He takes over following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa, who decided to walk away from the job after the FIFA World Cup.

They drew against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde before losing to Spain in their final group game.
Forlan was part of the Uruguay national team that finished in fourth place at the 2010 edition of the Mundial, earning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.
He also played a starring role for La Celeste as they won the Copa America one year later.
Diego Forlan will immediately begin his work as head coach, beginning with next month's friendly games.

Diego Forlan will be in charge of the U-20 and senior national teams until March 2027, when a review will take place.
He will oversee the games for La Celeste in the September-October international break, as well as in November.
His job description involves leading the U-20 team through the qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan next year, as well.
After the Football Association holds its presidential election in March 2027, they will decide on whether to keep Forlan or move in another direction for the next tournament cycle.

Uruguay have hedged their bets on an inexperienced coach in choosing to go with Diego Forlan this summer.
Forlan has a very limited coaching resumé and was more interested in pursuing professional tennis as recently as two years ago.
The former forward retired from playing in 2019 and got a job as Penarol head coach months later. He was sacked after four wins in 11 matches in charge of his former club.
He was appointed by second division side Atenas in 2021 and again won just four of his 12 games in charge before he was sacked.
He has since been without a coaching job, and has a lot to prove in charge of the national team.
