England delivered a ruthless response to their first-leg frustrations, beating Greece 5-0 at the King Power Stadium to secure an 8-1 aggregate victory and move closer to the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The Lionesses left little room for doubt on Tuesday night, producing a devastating first-half display to book their place in the second round of the European qualifying play-offs.

After a 3-1 victory in Crete had raised questions about their finishing and defensive concentration, Sarina Wiegman's side responded with four goals inside the opening 35 minutes.

Lauren James and Alessia Russo both scored twice, while Georgia Stanway also found the net as England took a significant step towards securing their place at next summer's tournament in Brazil.

England 5-0 Greece: James and Russo Lead the Rout

England could hardly have asked for a better start.

Just three minutes into the match, James drove forward from midfield before threading a perfectly weighted pass into Russo's path. The Arsenal striker held off her marker and calmly slotted home to give the hosts an early advantage.

James then doubled England's lead in the 16th minute, controlling Maya Le Tissier's pass before unleashing a powerful left-footed finish into the far corner.

Stanway made it three on the half-hour mark, meeting Lauren Hemp's delivery with a well-directed header before James completed the first-half scoring five minutes later.

Hemp again provided the creativity, delivering a dangerous ball from the left that James converted from close range.

The four-goal advantage reflected a much-improved attacking performance from England, who had struggled to turn their dominance into a more comfortable scoreline in the first leg.

Russo Completes Her Brace as England Impress

England continued to create opportunities after the break, although Greece offered greater resistance as the game progressed.

Debutant Lexi Potter briefly thought she had scored her first senior international goal before the referee ruled out her effort for a foul in the build-up. Stanway also saw a second goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

Wiegman used the comfortable advantage to manage minutes, introducing Beth Mead at half-time before making further changes.

The fifth goal arrived in the 75th minute when Keira Walsh split the Greek defence with an excellent pass. Russo raced through, rounded goalkeeper Styliani Katergiannaki and finished into an empty net to complete her brace.

The result also provided valuable experience for England's newcomers, with Potter starting on her debut and Freya Godfrey among the players introduced from the bench.

Ukraine Stand Between England and Brazil 2027

The victory sends England into the second round of the European play-offs, where they will face Ukraine across two legs between 26 November and 5 December.

The stakes will be considerably higher, with the winner securing qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.

England have already beaten Ukraine twice during the qualifying league phase, winning 6-1 away and 3-0 at home. However, Wiegman's side will need to maintain Tuesday's attacking sharpness to avoid any late complications.

The performance in Leicester was an important response to the concerns raised in Crete. James provided the creativity and finishing, Russo took her chances, and Hemp repeatedly caused problems down the left.

England are now just one two-legged tie away from reaching the tournament.

After a convincing night at the King Power Stadium, the Lionesses will head into November with renewed confidence, but the decisive test still awaits.
