Fabian Hurzeler is reportedly Manchester United’s leading Premier League candidate to replace Michael Carrick if the club decides to change head coach, according to The Sun.

United have yet to decide Carrick’s future, but Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid has added to concerns over the team’s start to the season.

Hurzeler has made an impression at Brighton since taking charge in 2024, leading the club to successive eighth-place Premier League finishes before moving them into the top three early this season.

His record against United, strict coaching style, and work with limited resources could appeal to the club, particularly given Brighton’s continued sale of key players. United would need Brighton’s approval to appoint Hurzeler.

Carrick will retain the board’s backing despite mounting pressure over results.

Why Hurzeler Could Be A Good Fit For Manchester United

Hurzeler has led Brighton to eighth-place finishes in each of his first two Premier League seasons. They have also made a strong start to 2026-27, winning four of their opening six league games, drawing one, and losing one.

Brighton have continued to compete despite selling key players. They sold João Pedro to Chelsea, Pervis Estupiñán to AC Milan, and Simon Adingra to Sunderland in 2025, leaving Hurzeler to reshape his squad while maintaining the team’s results.

Hurzeler told BBC Radio 5 Live in August 2025 that Brighton could not match the spending power of the biggest clubs, but said team unity and hard work could help them compete.

His experience at Brighton could appeal to United, who would be getting a manager accustomed to building competitive sides without relying solely on expensive signings. Hurzeler also places clear demands on his players, particularly senior figures.

In a November 2024 interview published by Brighton, he said he groups players into leaders, team players, and individualists, with different expectations for each. He added that he “always demand[s] a lot” from leaders.

Tactically, Hurzeler offers a defined playing identity. His Brighton side uses an aggressive press, quickly wins possession back, and relies on a clear positional structure.

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom cited the team’s identity, intensity and control when announcing Hurzeler’s contract extension in May 2026. That could appeal to United after years of managerial changes since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

How Hurzeler’s Brighton contract Might complicate any move

Brighton strengthened their position in May 2026 by announcing that Hurzeler had signed a new three-year contract running until June 2029. The agreement gives the club considerable protection if United decide to pursue him.

United would need to negotiate with Brighton to secure Hurzeler’s release. No compensation fee has been reported or confirmed.

Hurzeler’s relationship with Brighton’s hierarchy may also influence the situation. The club has supported his development since appointing him in 2024. Their recruitment model has helped him keep the team competitive despite key player sales.

Hurzeler’s contract does not rule out a move, but Brighton would have a say in any departure. United must decide whether he is the right long-term choice before pursuing a deal.

Carrick Retains United Backing Despite Pressure

Despite the speculation over Hurzeler, United have shown no sign of losing faith in Carrick. The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that he was unaware of any plans to sack the head coach, adding:

“On the contrary, they are right behind him and want him to succeed.”

Carrick secured the permanent job after winning 11 of his 16 matches as interim head coach following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January. He collected 36 points and guided United to Champions League qualification before signing a two-year contract on 22 May 2026.
