Arsenal have confirmed Georgia Stanway as their first signing of the 2026-27 summer transfer window, bringing one of Europe's most accomplished central midfielders to north London.
The 27-year-old joins on a permanent deal after her contract with Bayern Munich expired at the end of last season. She will wear the No. 4 shirt at the Emirates, returning to English football after four years in Germany that yielded eight trophies and helped establish her as one of the most complete midfielders in the women's game.
"It's an unbelievable feeling and I'm so proud to be joining Arsenal," Stanway said.
"This is a massive club that is driving the women's game forward to new levels, and I want to be a part of it. I want to win trophies and grow as a player, and this is the right place to do that with the backing of an incredible fanbase."
What Georgia Stanway Brings to Arsenal
Born in Barrow-in-Furness on 3rd January 1999, Stanway began her football journey in Blackburn Rovers' academy, making her senior debut in February 2015 at just 16 years old.
She joined Manchester City later that summer and went on to make 186 appearances, scoring 67 goals during a seven-year spell that yielded one Women's Super League title, three FA Cups, and three League Cups.
She was named the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2019 after earning a place in the 2018 UEFA Women's Champions League Team of the Season.
When Bayern came calling in 2022, Stanway admitted she had reached a "standstill" at Manchester City. The move to Germany proved transformative. Across 128 appearances for Bayern, she scored 32 goals and won eight trophies.
Four consecutive Frauen-Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals, and two DFL-Supercups. She also played a central role in Bayern's run to the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-finals in 2025-26, the club's deepest run in five years.
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers was direct about what the signing adds: "Georgia is a brilliant midfielder, and we're thrilled that she is an Arsenal player. She will add a new dimension to our midfield, bringing experience and adding to our winning mentality."

Why Stanway Is a Major Signing for Arsenal's WSL Ambitions
Arsenal's pursuit of Stanway addresses a clear need in midfield. The Gunners have relied heavily on Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey in recent seasons, while Kyra Cooney-Cross missed significant periods through injury last campaign.
That lack of depth ultimately hurt Arsenal's title challenge, prompting Director of Women's Football Clare Wheatley to prioritise central midfield reinforcement this summer.
The club has also lost Katie McCabe, Beth Mead, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina, and Manuela Zinsberger, all of whom departed after their contracts expired this summer. Stanway's arrival provides proven experience as Arsenal begin what is expected to be a significant squad rebuild ahead of the new WSL season.
At the international level, Stanway has scored 33 goals in 93 England appearances and started both of the Lionesses' European Championship final victories, in 2022 and 2025.
She scored against Norway and bagged the winner against Spain during the 2022 triumph. In recognition of her contributions to the game, she received an MBE in the New Year Honours in January 2026.
Stanway is understood to be the first of several arrivals at Arsenal this summer. Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Geraldine Reuteler is reportedly close to completing a move to north London, while former Barcelona full-back Ona Batlle has also been consistently linked with the club.
Arsenal have not won the WSL since 2019, and with Stanway now on board, Slegers is beginning to shape a squad capable of ending that wait.
