La Liga president Javier Tebas has hit back at Real Madrid TV over its continued coverage of the Negreira case, insisting that investigating historical events is very different from claiming they are still influencing Spanish refereeing in 2026.

The long-running dispute surrounding Barcelona and former refereeing official Jose María Enriquez Negreira has once again become a major talking point in Spanish football.

Real Madrid have continued to raise concerns over the case, with the club's official television channel regularly questioning the integrity of Spanish refereeing.

But Tebas has now delivered another strong response, arguing that Real Madrid TV is promoting a narrative that he believes is not supported by the current evidence.

Javier Tebas Insists the Negreira Case Must Be Investigated

Tebas was keen to make one point clear.

He has not changed his view on the seriousness of the original allegations.

The La Liga president reiterated that the payments made by Barcelona to companies linked to Negreira must be investigated fully, with the judicial process determining whether those payments influenced the refereeing system.

"I still think exactly the same about the Negreira case: what happened was extremely serious and must be investigated to the end," Tebas said on X.

However, he drew a firm distinction between investigating what happened in the past and suggesting that Negreira continues to have an influence over Spanish refereeing today.

"It's one thing to investigate facts that ended years ago and quite another to build in 2026 the narrative that Negreira is still influencing Spanish refereeing today."

Tebas then directly referenced Real Madrid TV.

"That's an outrage. And repeating it from Real Madrid TV doesn't make it true."

What Is the Negreira Case and What Is Being Investigated?

The controversy centres on payments made by Barcelona to companies linked to Negreira, who was vice-president of Spain's Technical Committee of Referees.

The judicial investigation is examining whether the payments influenced the refereeing system, including the promotion and relegation of officials, and whether they could amount to sporting corruption.

The case has therefore remained highly contentious, particularly given the relationship between Barcelona and Negreira during his time as a senior figure within Spanish refereeing.

Real Madrid have repeatedly called for the matter to be fully investigated and recently supplied UEFA with a substantial amount of documentation relating to the case. UEFA confirmed it had received the material, while the investigation remains ongoing.

However, the ongoing judicial investigation has not established through a final verdict that Barcelona influenced individual refereeing decisions through those payments.

Why Javier Tebas Says the Courts Should Decide the Negreira Case

For Tebas, that distinction is crucial.

Rather than La Liga imposing its own punishment before the judicial process has concluded, he believes the courts should be allowed to examine the evidence and reach their own conclusions.

"Let the judges investigate, let all evidence be examined, and let the matter be pursued to its conclusion," he said.

He also questioned what critics expect La Liga to do while that process continues.

"Do they want FC Barcelona and its current leadership removed from La Liga entirely?"

Tebas continued by asking whether La Liga should effectively replace the courts, issue its own verdict and impose a punishment before a judicial ruling exists.

He also pointed out that the alleged facts are time-barred under Spain's sporting disciplinary system, making the ongoing judicial process particularly important in determining what, if any, consequences follow.

Why the Negreira Case Has Become Part of the Tebas-Real Madrid Dispute

Tebas' latest comments are another chapter in an increasingly tense relationship between the La Liga president and Real Madrid.

The dispute extends beyond the Negreira case, with Tebas having previously criticised the club's complaints about refereeing and Real Madrid responding by accusing the league president of repeatedly targeting the club.

Los Blancos have continued to challenge what they see as problems within Spanish football's refereeing system, while Tebas has consistently pushed back against claims of a wider conspiracy.

That makes the Negreira case more than simply a historical legal investigation.

It has become part of a much wider argument about trust in Spanish football, refereeing and the institutions responsible for running the game.

What Happens Next in the Negreira Case?

For now, the central question remains with the Spanish courts.

The Negreira case has not reached a final conclusion, while UEFA has confirmed that the documentation supplied by Real Madrid will be considered as part of its ongoing investigation.

Tebas insists the historical allegations should be investigated fully.

What he rejects is the suggestion that the former refereeing official is still influencing Spanish football years after the payments ended.

And with Real Madrid continuing to raise the issue through their own channels, the battle over the narrative surrounding the Negreira case appears far from over.
