Manchester United's January 2014 transfer window delivered one of the biggest deals in the club's history, with a £37.1million move bringing a highly regarded Premier League playmaker to Old Trafford.

Despite being an established figure at Stamford Bridge, the midfielder was keen to explore a new challenge after falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho. Rather than wait for his situation to change, he took matters into his own hands and arranged a meeting with Chelsea to explain why a transfer was the right decision.

That player was Juan Mata, who admitted he was determined to join United once the opportunity became a genuine possibility.

Mata's Chelsea career took a turn under Mourinho

Mata arrived at Chelsea from Valencia in the summer of 2011 and quickly became one of the club's most influential attacking players.

The Spaniard made an immediate impression, playing a key role in Chelsea's historic Champions League triumph during his debut season. His creativity and technical ability made him a popular figure at Stamford Bridge, while consecutive Chelsea Player of the Year awards in 2012 and 2013 underlined his importance to the team.

However, his position changed following Mourinho's return to Chelsea in the summer of 2013.

Mata struggled to secure a regular starting place under the Portuguese manager, with the competition for attacking midfield positions making it increasingly difficult for him to have the same influence.

Although he was initially reluctant to leave, the arrival of interest from Manchester United during the January transfer window presented an opportunity he ultimately felt he had to take.

Why Mata pushed for a move to Manchester United

Speaking on the UTD Podcast in 2020, Mata explained how United's interest had initially emerged during the previous summer before becoming a concrete opportunity several months later.

He revealed that the earlier approach had not developed into a formal offer, meaning he was not seriously considering leaving Chelsea at that stage.

However, the situation changed when the January transfer window opened.

"The summer before, there was some interest [from United]. No [I wouldn't leave then]. I wanted to see what the challenge was and there was never really anything else other than interest. There was not an offer, so I didn't have the real opportunity," Mata explained.

He also stressed that he was not someone who wanted to walk away simply because circumstances had become difficult.

"I'm not one who wants to leave when the situation is tough," he added.

Nevertheless, once United made their offer, the midfielder was convinced that a move to Old Trafford was the right next step in his career.

Mata reportedly had other offers available, but United's stature and the opportunity to take on a new challenge proved decisive.

He subsequently arranged a meeting with Chelsea officials to discuss his future, making it clear that he wanted the transfer to happen.

The Spaniard viewed the deal as beneficial for all parties, with the opportunity to move to one of English football's biggest clubs too appealing to turn down.

A record transfer and eight years at Old Trafford

Manchester United eventually secured Mata's signature in January 2014 for £37.1million, making him the club's record signing at the time.

His arrival came during a difficult period for United, who were adjusting to life under David Moyes following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Mata brought creativity and experience to the squad, becoming a regular presence across several seasons and working under a succession of managers.

He remained at Old Trafford for eight years before leaving in 2022, having made more than 50 appearances in each of his first two full seasons at the club.

Although his time at Chelsea had brought major honours and individual recognition, his decision to push for a move ultimately began another significant chapter in his career.

What initially appeared to be an uncertain situation under Mourinho became an opportunity to join Manchester United, with Mata making it clear that once the offer arrived, he had little doubt about the move he wanted.
