Sustaining a world-class academy pipeline requires young talents who seamlessly step onto European football's biggest stages.

For Liverpool, one of the greatest to ever do it was Steven Gerrard, and all at the club would have been thrilled to see Lewis Koumas emulate their iconic captain against LASK.

The 21-year-old Wales international scored one and provided an assist, opening his European account for his boyhood club in their 6-3 win in Linz.

He secured his place in the club's record books, matching Gerrard's record from 25 years ago.

How Lewis Koumas Matched Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool European Record

Andoni Iraola was impressed by Koumas in pre-season and opted to have the versatile youngster remain in the first-team picture, particularly as Hugo Ekitike remained sidelined.

The Spaniard trusted the Wales international to start for a second successive game against LASK, having also started in the Premier League defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

Koumas delivered a typically industrious performance leading the line, and delivered a fine performance over 90 minutes.

He teed up Bradley Barcola for Liverpool's opening goal before ruthlessly dispatching the Reds' sixth goal of the night in the 72nd minute.

Between both efforts, he had two well-taken goals ruled out by the assistant referee but continued plugging away until he found the net.

According to Opta statistics, Koumas became only the second player aged 21 or younger in Liverpool's rich European history to register both a goal and an assist in a single Champions League match.

The only other player to have ever achieved the feat was club legend Steven Gerrard against Dynamo Kyiv in October 2001.

From Tranmere to Liverpool’s Kirkby Academy: Lewis Koumas’ Journey

Lewis Koumas was born into football, as his father Jason played in the Premier League for West Bromwich Albion.

Koumas Sr joined Liverpool's academy as a nine-year-old, playing alongside Gerrard and Michael Owen.

In 2015, he ended his career at Tranmere Rovers, the club he joined after he left Liverpool in 1997.

Lewis Koumas began his own football journey at Tranmere before joining Liverpool’s academy at Under-11 level.

He joined the Reds as a versatile midfielder but was converted into a direct, high-volume attacking winger and forward, steadily climbing the developmental ladder at Kirkby.

After starring across Premier League 2 and making an immediate goalscoring splash during his senior FA Cup debut against Southampton, his physical development, pressing work rate, and positional versatility earned him a permanent place in the senior squad rotation.

Koumas was part of the matchday squad when Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final in 2024, even though he did not make it off the bench.

He had multiple loan stints in the EFL with Stoke City, Birmingham City, and Hull City before his emergence as a first-team regular this season.

3 Lessons Young Footballers Can Learn From Lewis Koumas

  • Embrace Multi-Positional Versatility Early: The demands of the modern game require that young players be able to feature in multiple different positions, regardless of their primary position. Developing comfort across central and wide attacking roles makes these players indispensable to first-team managers when tactical adjustments are required.
  • Balance Goalscoring Instincts with Unselfish Play: Throughout his time in the first team so far, Lewis Koumas has stood out for his selfless play and energy when leading the line. Young players must identify that combining individual finishing with key passes (like setting up teammates) doubles their value to the team's offensive machinery.
  • Capitalize on Every Opportunity: Young players must be prepared to make themselves useful whenever they are called upon, even in training sessions. Koumas' high-intensity pressing and clinical execution helped him to stand out in pre-season, leading to a sustained stay in the first-team.
