Liverpool managed to beat Spurs as the Summer signings starred. Tottenham who went down to nine men in the last 10 minutes kept the pressure high towards the end and made Liverpool look as if they had men missing on the pitch. Goals from Ekitike and Isak pulled Liverpool through.
The loss does mean Spurs continue their terrible home record. With only seventeen points being gained at the Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium since November 2024. Liverpool continues to gel as a team as they go to make today their 6th game unbeaten in all competitions.
The first half both teams came out and looked cautious. The main aim for both seemed to be don’t concede early. This led to an awkward start to the game with little action between the two. In such a historically high scoring fixture both teams looked compact but could not find flair going forward and the final ball looked off.
The two main chances in the first half for each side were headers. Van Dijk flicked a header on from a powerful cross but landed straight to Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario in the 12th minute. Kolo Muani then had the chance for spurs where he headed the ball straight towards Alisson with no power. Leading to a comfortable save.
The first red card then came for Spurs. After looking to be struggling, placing Stray passes and sloppy on the ball, Xavi Simons darted towards Van Dijk. The two international teammates collided, and Simons scraped his studs down the back of Van Dijk’s calf. Referee John Brookes initially gave the challenge a yellow card which VAR then overturned to give a red.
Spurs didn’t react to the red card badly. Two Liverpool corners turned into two Spurs counters. Proving that they were still a threat going forward.
The first half ended 0-0 Spurs low confidence showed and both teams looked to go into the game not conceding early which led to a lacklustre first half with minimal action. Liverpool looked as if they needed some attacking firepower entering the second half to capitalise on the 10 men spurs.
As the second half starts Alexander Isak came on for Connor Bradley who got a knock towards the end of the first half. Looking to add to the flair Liverpool needed to breakdown the Spurs defence. Szoboszlai moves into right back where he has not been a stranger to that position this season for Liverpool.
The first Liverpool goal then came in the 57th minute Alexander Isak the scorer and assisted by Florian Wirtz. Romero gifts Liverpool the ball from a sloppy clearance. Liverpool capitalises and finish nicely. Proving Isak was just what Liverpool needed in their attack to break down Tottenham.
After the goal Isak is then taken off immediately due to injury after Van De Ven clattered into the striker trying to block the shot. Jeremy Frimpong replaced Isak and Szoboszlai moved back into midfield with Ekitike taking his role of lone striker back up.
Spurs then take it up a gear and start knocking on the door in the 60th minute Kolo Muani has a deflected shot that dips onto the crossbar, spurs still proving they’re a threat going forward.
However, Liverpool goes on to add a second in the 66th minute. A deflected cross from Frimpong loops into the box which Ekitike battles for and rises above Romero to head past Vicario in goal. Romero is booked as he argues he was fouled in the jump for the ball.
Liverpool looked comfortable and as if they should see out this 2-0 victory against 10-man spurs. Until Ricarlison is brought on in the 81st minute. Two minutes after coming on the substitute had an immediate impact scoring after a scrappy attempt of a clearance. The ball falls to the Brazilian as he half volleys the ball home inside the box against a favoured opponent.
Spurs then looked the better team in the last 15 minutes. With 9 minutes of injury time, they were looking the bigger threat and Liverpool seemed to crumble defensively. They were hanging on for dear life.
Tensions proved to be too high for Spurs captain Romero though as in the 93rd minute he lunges out at Konate giving him an elbow in the stomach. Theo referee gives the defender his second yellow and Spurs have another man down the tunnel for a second stupid red card.
This hindered spurs chances again and the game ended in a 2-1 victory for the visitors. New stars shining with both goals and assists at the Tottenham Hotspur’s Stadium.
