Luka Modric played his last World Cup game against Portugal and will most likely not be playing any other big tournament for Croatia following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as his international retirement time is getting very close.
Alongside the international retirement decision, Modric will have to take another crucial decision in his career during this summer transfer window.
In fact, Milan are proposing to him to continue playing for the team for another season while rebuilding their squad and reinforcing it with new talented players in order to compete more seriously for the title and for the top four spots next season.
At the same time, Real Madrid are monitoring the situation and are preparing a non-playing role for the 40-year-old in case he choses to retire from playing professional football, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Real Madrid Planning Luka Modric's Return

The Spanish newspaper confirmed that Los Blancos will be interested in offering Modric a non-playing role that has not been revealed yet, benefitting from the excellent relationship between the Croatian and Jose Mourinho.
In fact, Mourinho was the one who brought Modric to the Santiago Bernabeu back in 2012. So, it will not be strange at all to see the Croatian joining Mourinho’s coaching staff.
A return to Madrid will not be surprising at all whether for a advisory/managerial role or in a technical position, given that the Croatian was one of the club’s best ever midfielders for a long period.
That said, the decision will be made depending on Modric’s desire, and especially on whether he still wants to keep playing football or not.
Milan Want Modric for One More Season

The options available to Modric for now are either retirement or continuing to play for Milan, the club he supported throughout his childhood.
The Rossoneri proposed to Modric to remain at the club and be a pivotal figure within the squad like he was last season.
The difference this season is that Milan brought in a new manager in Ruben Amorim, with new ideas and playing style, as well as a project that sounds interesting as the management have already started signing new valuable players such as Paris Saint-Germain striker, Goncalo Ramos.
With the club ready to reinforce the squad with other key players, it is expected to see Milan bouncing back again and challenging for the top spots in Serie A with the hope of participating in the UEFA Champions League again in the season after.
And let’s not forget that Milan will also be playing in the UEFA Europa League this season, and that represents another trophy for the 40-year-old to win before he retires.
Considering Milan’s ambitious Amorim new era, Modric might be tempted to remain in Italy for another season before looking at the non-playing offers especially from Real Madrid.
