While the biggest transfer saga at Chelsea right now hinges on whether or not Enzo Fernandez will wind up leaving the club before the summer window ends, the Blues are still doing business elsewhere.

In the latest twist of the transfer tales at Stamford Bridge, defender Mamadou Sarr has been loaned to Real Sociedad in La Liga for this season, the club have confirmed.

He'll be joining the Basque club after they suffered two losses to open their league campaign against the likes of Real Madrid and Real Betis, which ironically followed their last friendly of the preseason; a 3-1 loss to Chelsea.

Why Mamadou Sarr's Real Sociedad Loan Makes Sense

After being recalled from his Ligue 1 loan spell at Strasbourg midway through last season by Liam Rosenior, things never quite worked out for Sarr at Chelsea.

The club were in need of depth midway through last season, but the Senegal international has only made a total of seven appearances across all competitions for Chelsea.

At the time, he was doing quite well with Strasbourg, so getting recalled back to London really stunted his momentum and it became clear that a loam move away for this season was the right way to proceed.

With the way Chelsea's season went last year before Rosenior was ultimately given the axe in April, the writing was on the wall, and Sarr's loan recall had all of the hallmarks of something that just was not going to work out.

While his current contract with Chelsea runs through the summer of 2033, Sarr spending this season at Sociedad gives him a chance to get back on track in an environment where he will presumably be getting regular first team minutes under American manager Pellegrino Matarazzo.

From their first two matches in La Liga, they've conceded five goals already with the center back pairings of Jon Martin and Luken Beitia (loss to Madrid) and Martin and Igor Zubeldia, so Matarazzo will be hoping Sarr can help shore up his defense.

For a player that regularly wore the captain's armband for Strasbourg and got called up to Senegal's World Cup squad this summer, not playing regular minutes is not the ideal situation, so hopefully for Sarr, Chelsea, and Sociedad, this loan move works out well.

A lot can happen in a season, but Xabi Alonso and his coaching staff will certainly be keeping a close eye on Sarr in Spain.

The Spanish manager used a back three of Maxence Lacroix, Josh Acheampong, and Levi Colwill in the 3-2 win at Fulham in their Premier League opener, so if Alonso chooses to regularly use a back three, that gives Sarr even more chance of potentially having a place in the team after this season as a centre-back by trade.
