When Moises Caicedo made the move to Chelsea in August 2023, he'd become one of the most coveted players in English football. The Blues won the race to sign the Ecuadorian from Brighton & Hove Albion but not without Liverpool trying to hijack their pursuit.

Caicedo has since lived up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, putting in inspired performances at the heart of their midfield. If you needed prove of his importance, his return to the team following a spell on the sidelines helped Xabi Alonso's men beat Bournemouth 5-1 after a three-week international break.

Alonso grinned when asked about Caicedo's return after the game, telling club media: "I couldn't wait to have him back to be honest." That is echoed by fans whose confidence grew ahead of the game once his name had been announced in the starting lineup.

Moises Caicedo - A New Breed of Defensive Midfielder

It's fair to say that the Premier League has been the home to arguably the best pool of defensive midfielders of any league in history. Roy Keane, Claude Makelele, Gilberto Silva, Patrick Vieira, N'Golo Kante, and Rodri are among the greats to have anchored their teams.

Caicedo is one of the latest midfield anchormen who are making names for themselves in today's game. He's not a throwback to the gritty Keane or the aggressive Vieira, but more of a ball-playing holding midfielder who can unlock defences while putting out fires.

You need just look at his statistics against Bournemouth, winning three of four tackles, seven of 10 ground duels and finding his man with two long ball attempts. It was a superb showing and proved just why even rival fans acknowledge him as one of the finest midfielders in the top-flight.

Such has been his rise in English football that those who know all about Premier League success have glossed over him. One of those is Rio Ferdinand who back in October 2025 admitted he wanted former club Manchester United to sign him.

'I Saw The Value': Ferdinand Wanted Caicedo at Man Utd

Ferdinand, a six-time Premier League champion, compared Caicedo to Arsenal's Declan Rice while speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast:

"There are many similarities between them. Rice may be more attack-minded, but Caicedo senses danger better and faster when defending."

Ferdinand revealed he'd been pushing for United to move for the Ecuadorian: "When he was for sale, I was shouting for them to bring him to Manchester United. I saw the value Caicedo had… it would have been magnificent if he had arrived and they had given him time to develop."

Caicedo didn't end up at Old Trafford and instead headed to Stamford Bridge after a stellar spell at Brighton. He's been one of the most influental signings of the Clearlake era and Ferdinand believes they possess the very best player in his position: "If you play him as a holding midfielder, I’d say Caicedo is the best."

Caicedo has since made 150 appearances for Chelsea, proving his worth not just defensively but also going forward. He's scored eight goals, provided 11 assists and at the age of just 24 will surely be looking to further write his name in Premier League history.

Caicedo's Mentality Deserves More Recognition

When players make big-money moves they can falter due to the pressure that comes with living up to their price tag. One bad game can immediately make headlines as the English press look to pounce and throw a transfer fee or a player's reported wages in a title.

Given the vasts amount of money paid for players in today's game, many have unfortunately been unable to escape the clutches of UK media toxicity. Caicedo's consistency hasn't allowed for this to happen as he has shown his world-class ability along with his incredible mentality, a humble lad from Ecuador who is realising his dream.

It takes a lot of mental strength to become a top Premier League talent and it's been admirable watching Caicedo kick on and become a main man at Stamford Bridge. That's not to say he hasn't overcome setbacks including a disappointing debut against West Ham United.

Caicedo made clear just how important having the right mentality is when speaking to club media in November 2023:

"Winners never give up. If you have a bad game, or things are not going like you wanted… it’s frustrating because you always want to win, or always want to go home happy. When you lose, you are going to be sad – that’s normal – but in that moment, you have to learn. You have to think about the game you lost and see what you have to improve, what you have to do to help the team."

If you ask the greats such as Keane or Vieira how they captained their teams to success, they'd likely reaffirm Caicedo's stance on resilience. And this winning spirit is exactly why he is going to be such a crucial member of Alonso's team moving forward.

Caicedo is a role model whom younger fans should look to for inspiration, especially those who are perhaps growing in disadvantaged environments. Never give up and believe in yourself and your abilities just like Chelsea's midfield general has throughout his life and career.
