Mykhailo Mudryk Second Chance – Why Chelsea Star Will Be Reborn at De Zerbi’s Tottenham

Mykhailo Mudryk has been handed the opportunity to get his career back on track after Tottenham Hotspur agreed on a loan deal with Chelsea to sign the Ukrainian winger.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Spurs are set to pay a loan fee for Mudryk and have a buy option inserted into the deal. He will be reuniting with Roberto De Zerbi, a manager who oversaw his development at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Mudryk has spent roughly 20 months out of action after serving a ban following a positive test for a banned substance. The FA handed him an initial four-year suspension back in December 2024.

Why Roberto De Zerbi Trusts Mudryk to Come Good at Tottenham

The 25-year-old successfully appealed the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in August 2026. His ban was rescinded, and he is now free to get back to playing football after a difficult period in his career.

Despite this, there had been little to suggest Xabi Alonso would be handing him regular game time this season. The arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa has only further pushed the Ukrainian down the pecking order.

Mudryk had already endured a frustrating spell at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Shakhtar back in early 2023 for an initial £62 million. He's yet to rediscover the form shown under De Zerbi while playing in the Ukrainian top flight at the start of his career.

Spurs have turned to the pacey attacker after missing out on Everton's Iliman Ndiaye. Manchester City have agreed on a deal for the Toffees star and the Lilywhites have thus pivoted.

This is the perfect opportunity for Mudryk to prove just why Chelsea and Arsenal were eager to bring him to the Premier League over three years ago. He'll be playing under a manager who knows his strengths and how to get the most out of him.

De Zerbi's admiration of the 28-cap Ukraine international has been well documented. In fact, the Italian coach once tipped him to become a future Ballon d'Or winner, speaking back in December 2022 (via Planet Sport):

"I think Mudryk can win the Ballon d'Or in the future - I know the value of Mudryk, he has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or."<br>

While there are inevitably question marks over Spurs' decision to sign Mudryk, De Zerbi clearly feels he can make an impact for the North Londoners. There are players who realise their potential under certain managers and that may well be the case for the soon-to-be Lilywhites attacker.

Mudryk also offers a unique profile, boasting explosive pace along with the intent to take his man on. There have been glaring issues for De Zerbi's attack at the start of the season following defeats to Brentford (3-0) and Newcastle United (2-0).

The hope for De Zerbi will be that the player regains confidence and proves his doubters wrong. There aren't many better man-managers in the Premier League, and he'll acknowledge how important this moment is in the player's career.

Tottenham Needed Attacking Reinforcements

Spurs have spent heavily in this transfer window as they looked to ensure they don't spend another season battling it out at the bottom of the table. Sandro Tonali arrived from Newcastle for £100m while Matheus Fernandes headed across London from West Ham United in an £85m deal.

It's taken until the latter stages of the window for De Zerbi's transfer chiefs to bolster his attack that struggled last season. They landed Omar Marmoush and Savinho from Manchester City and were keen on Ndiaye.

With the Everton man now heading to City, it made sense for the Lilywhites to quickly find an alternative. De Zerbi appears to have been the driving force behind the decision to sign Mudryk, and he'll be the one tasked with ensuring it proves to be the right call.
