TV personality Piers Morgan has called out Portugal for disrespecting their 'greatest player' Cristiano Ronaldo after his shirt number was given to Rafael Leao.
Ronaldo angrily left the Portuguese national team camp in Copenhagen, on the eve of their UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark.
The 41-year-old appeared to be unhappy after being an unused substitute in the Selecao's 2-1 win over Norway on September 27, and his meeting with head coach Jorge Jesus alongside the Portuguese FA president, Pedro Proneca on Wednesday did not salvage the situation.
Portugal have now moved on from Ronaldo's sudden exit, with Galatasaray forward Leao handed the number 7 shirt for the match against Denmark.
Leao started for Portugal in Parken on Thursday, and his performance on the flanks contributed to the Selecao's 4-2 victory on the road, making it three wins out of three games.
PIERS MORGAN FURIOUS ABOUT PORTUGAL'S DECISION
Morgan has described the decision to give the number 7 shirt to Leao within 24 hours as a disrespect to Ronaldo.
The British media personality, who is also an Arsenal fan, said the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star deserved better treatment for his contributions in the 23-year international career.
"Disgusting, if true," Morgan tweeted in response to Leao's new shirt number. "After everything Cristiano has done for Portugal, why the hell are they treating him like this?
"Yesterday was his father’s birthday, and he played for his country the day after his dad died. Shameful to see this shocking disrespect for their greatest player."
While Ronaldo is still waiting for the right time to reveal the truth about the whole situation that has happened in the last few days, several Portuguese outlets claim the Al Nassr star played his final game for Portugal against Wales on September 24.
Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer and most-capped player in Portuguese national team history, with 146 goals in 234 matches.
