Senegal have confirmed the sacking of manager Pape Thiaw just under two weeks after experiencing heartbreak of the highest degree. After leading 2-0 until the 85th minute, substitute Lukaku halved the deficit.
Just four minutes later, Aston Villa midfielder Tielemans levelled the scoring to take the Round of 16 tie into extra time. A controversial penalty led Belgium to a surprising 3-2 win.
Pape Gueye Publicly Criticises Senegal's Coaching Staff
Following the shocking exit, Pape Gueye went on strike and attacked the coaching staff whilst doing so. On Instagram the 27 year old said: "l'Il be back to give you a few words regarding elimination… but l announce today that as long as it's this technical staff l'II take a break from the selection".
Gueye started three of Senegal's four World Cup games, and in the game he didn't start he still managed to score goals and provide one assist in a 5-0 thumping of Iraq to tee up the Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
Senegal FA Confirm Pape Thiaw's Departure
"The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) informs the public that following the meeting of the Executive Committee held this Saturday, July 11, 2026, it was decided to initiate a procedure to terminate the functions of the national coach, Mr Pape Thiaw, as well as his entire technical staff."
The federation also confirmed there will be a press conference headed by the President of the Senegalese Football Federation.
"Furthermore, the President of the Senegalese Football Federation will hold a press conference on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 4 p.m., at the Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium."
How Pape Thiaw's Time as Senegal Manager Unfolded
The 45-year-old started as Senegal A manager and led them to an African Nations Championship. The African Nations Championship limits squads to those that play domestically whereas AFCON allows no limit in selection.
However, he did win silverware which was the first time Senegal had won this tournament. He was rewarded with promotion to the Senegal team ahead of AFCON 2025.
Pape Thiaw led Senegal to the AFCON final in 2025 but after displaying "unsporting conduct" by urging his players to leave the pitch after a penalty was given in Morocco's favour, Morocco was given the win and Thiaw was given a $100,000 fine and five game ban. His tenure with Senegal's national team has been clouded in controversy and fines.
Why Patrick Vieira Is the Favourite to Replace Thiaw
As per L'Equipe, Patrick Viera is the main target to replace Thiaw. The former Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa manager is currently without a job after leaving Genoa in November 2025 by mutual consent.
The former Invincible, has invested in the creation of Diambars, one of the largest training centers in the country and was born in Dakar. Internally, it is understood that he is the ideal candidate to replace Thiaw.
