The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have announced plans to hand the men’s national team head coach, Luis de la Fuente a new contract. 

De la Fuente’s current deal with the Spanish FA was expected to run out after the 2028 European Championship but the new deal will now take him beyond the 2030 FIFA World Cup and until 2032.

The 65-year-old was appointed Spain head coach in 2022 after working across the country’s age-grade teams from the U19, U20 to the Olympic team. 

SPAIN PREPARE LUCRATIVE OFFER FOR DE LA FUENTE

President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Rafael Louzan has expressed satisfaction with De La Fuente’s performance as Spain coach. 

Louzan confirmed that the new deal would  make the former Athletic Bilbao and Alaves manager one of the best-paid coaches in the world. 

Louzan said at the World Football Summit, per AS: “His results speak for themselves, and his work ethic speaks for itself... and the public loves and appreciates him.

“I offered him a contract extension because he was not among the top ten in terms of salary. He will be. 

“We are in the process of finalising the agreement so that he can stay for a few more years. 

“He has spent 14 years here, and I want him to end his career here.”

De La Fuente’s engagement with the RFEF started in 2013 when he took over of the country’s U19 team and after five years, he was charge of Spain U20 from 2018 to 2022. 

He was also in charge of Spain’s Olympic team briefly in 2021 for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games before taking over of La Roja. 

DE LA FUENTE’S SUCCESS AS SPAIN COACH 

The 65-year-old has enjoyed tremendous success with Spain since he was appointed the national team head coach in December 2022. 

He is the only manager to have won the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League. 

Before getting the national team job, De la Fuente had enjoyed similar successes with the youth teams by winning the European U19 Championship in 2015, the European U20 Championship in 2019 and a silver medal with the Olympic team at Tokyo 2020 Games. 

While the RFEF continue to finalise the next course of their engagement, De la Fuente is focused on announcing his Spain squad for the upcoming international break on Friday. 

La Roja will play England, Croatia and Czech Republic in the UEFA Nations League during the upcoming window.
