Manchester United have made enquiries about Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as they assess potential targets ahead of the transfer window. However, their interest has not progressed to formal negotiations, according to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto.

United have also asked about Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios, with both players seen as potential options to strengthen their midfield.

Barcelona’s stance complicates United enquiry.

Barcelona are unlikely to make Lopez's departure easy. The midfielder signed an improved contract in February 2026, keeping him at the club until 30 June 2031, and remains an important part of their first-team plans.

Lopez's reported €500 million release clause further highlights how difficult a potential deal could be. However, that figure has not been officially confirmed as part of his latest contract.

Barcelona regard the 23-year-old as a key player, while Atletico Madrid have taken a similarly firm stance on Barrios, making either transfer difficult to negotiate.

Why Lopez fits United’s midfield search

Lopez offers the attacking qualities United are looking to add to their midfield. Although primarily a midfielder, he can operate in advanced positions, make late runs into the box and contribute defensively.

His numbers underline his attacking influence. The Spaniard recorded 13 goals and 17 assists in more than 3,000 minutes during the 2025/26 season, following eight goals and nine assists in Barcelona's 2024/25 treble-winning campaign.

Those performances help explain United's interest, but Barcelona's contract protection and Lopez's importance to the team make a January move difficult. For now, the Premier League club is continuing to assess their options rather than pursuing a formal deal.
