Vinicius Junior has been handed a four-match La Liga suspension that rules him out of El Clasico, with the Real Madrid forward criticising the timing of the announcement before his side’s Champions League clash with Roma.
Real Madrid will be without one of their biggest attacking threats when they face Barcelona on 25 October after Vinícius was suspended following his controversial red card against Villarreal.
The Brazilian learned of the punishment just hours before Madrid’s European meeting with Roma, leaving him frustrated with the timing of the announcement and what he described as a lack of communication surrounding the disciplinary rules.
The decision did not prevent Madrid from producing a dramatic comeback in Rome, where late goals from Carlos Espi, Endrick and Antonio Rudiger secured a 4-3 victory.
However, the result was overshadowed by the growing controversy surrounding Vinicius’ suspension, which will force Jose Mourinho to reconsider his attacking options for one of the biggest fixtures of the season.
Vinicius Junior Criticises Timing of Suspension
Vinicius did not hide his frustration after discovering he would miss four domestic matches, including the trip to Barcelona.
Speaking after the victory over Roma, the forward said he had only learned about the suspension when he arrived at the stadium.
"I only heard about it at the stadium. I think the ban came at a bad time," Vini said.
"They had all day to announce the suspension and just as I get to the stadium, I get the message that I’m going to miss four La Liga games."
The Brazilian also questioned whether players had been properly informed about the disciplinary regulations being applied to his case.
"The truth is that the rule is new. They’ve never explained this to us," he added, arguing that players usually receive explanations from La Liga or the relevant refereeing authorities about new rules.
His comments have added another layer to an already contentious incident, with Madrid now facing the prospect of losing one of their most influential players for a crucial period in the league campaign.
Why Has Vinicius Junior Been Banned for Four Matches?
The suspension follows Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal on 10 October.
Vinicius believed he had scored a second goal for Madrid, but a VAR review identified that he had pulled the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba during the build-up.
The goal was ruled out and the Brazilian was shown a straight red card.
The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee subsequently imposed a two-match suspension for the hair-pulling offence, with a further two matches added for his protests towards the referee following his dismissal.
Madrid’s appeal against the punishment was unsuccessful, leaving the four-match ban in place.
Vinicius had apologised to his team-mates and supporters after the Villarreal incident, but he continued to dispute the suggestion that he had committed an act of violence.
"I’ve never committed a violent act against another player," he said.
"I get kicked a lot and in the end, the card always goes to me."
Mourinho Criticises Timing of Vinicius Junior’s Ban
Mourinho was equally unhappy with the timing of the announcement, questioning why the decision had been made public so close to kick-off in Rome.
"Couldn’t they do it tomorrow morning?" the Madrid manager asked.
"They do things shamelessly now. The cat is out of the bag now. Two hours before the match, a player must know he has a four-match suspension."
Mourinho also questioned the potential psychological impact of informing a player of such significant news immediately before a major European fixture.
The timing became a major talking point after the match, although the suspension itself relates to Vinicius’ conduct during the Villarreal game and his subsequent reaction to the referee.
Which Matches Will Vinicius Junior Miss?
The four-match suspension applies to La Liga, meaning the 26-year-old remains available for Madrid’s Champions League fixtures during the ban.
He is set to miss:
- Sevilla – 18 October
- Barcelona – 25 October
- Racing de Santander – 1 November
- Valencia – 7 November
His absence against Barcelona is the most significant setback, with Madrid facing their fierce rivals in a fixture that could have major implications for the title race.
The Brazilian is expected to return for Madrid’s league meeting with Celta Vigo after the November international break.
Real Madrid Face El Clasico Without Vinicius Junior
Madrid’s comeback against Roma offered a reminder of the squad’s attacking depth, with Endrick making a decisive impact off the bench and Rudiger scoring the late winner.
Nevertheless, replacing Vini Jr will be a considerable challenge.
His pace, direct running and ability to create chances make him one of Madrid’s most dangerous attacking players, particularly in matches where space opens up on the counter-attack.
Mourinho must now find an alternative approach for the visit to Barcelona, while Vinicius will have to watch from the sidelines.
The suspension has created a major talking point ahead of El Clasico, but the immediate focus for Madrid will be navigating four league fixtures without one of their key players.
