North African dominance defined the opening day of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat.

Both host nation Morocco and neighboring Algeria completely swept Group A, leaving their respective opponents scoreless on night one.

Striver.Football highlights the six major tactical and operational takeaways from the opening fixtures at Moulay Hassan Stadium and the Olympic Stadium.

Morocco Make A Statement In Their Opening Match

The host nation made an immediate statement of intent by dismantling Kenya 4-0 at the Moulay Hassan Stadium.

Guided by former World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda, the Atlas Lionesses were fluid, technically superior, and utterly clinical in their spatial exploitation.

By overloading wide channels and executing precise crossing routines, Morocco effectively ended the contest in the first half with goals from Sakina Ouzraoui Diki, Maryame Atiq, and Ibtissam Jraidi.

Ibtissam Jraidi Is Chasing the Golden Boot

Moroccan forward Ibtissam Jraidi wasted no time asserting her dominance as one of the continent's most lethal penalty-box operators.

Dominating the aerial duels against Kenya's backline, Jraidi netted a clinical brace, scoring with a commanding first-half header before following up with a sharp, instinctive second-half finish.

She immediately sets the standard at the top of the tournament scoring charts.

Low Attendances Raise Early Concerns

Despite CAF's decision to price opening category tickets affordably (MAD 20 to 50) to spur turnouts, attendance during the opening double-header raised immediate concerns.

While Morocco's late kickoff generated pockets of home noise, the earlier clash between Algeria and Senegal was played in front of large sections of empty seats at the Olympic Stadium.

For an expanded tournament doubling as an elite showcase for African women's football, CAF and the local organising committee face an immediate operational hurdle to fill neutral venues.

Algeria's Defensive Strength Stands Out Again

Algeria kicked off their campaign with a composed, professional 2-0 victory over Senegal. Known for their rigid defensive block, the Fennecs reinforced their historical reputation for being almost impossible to breach.

Driven by Marine Dafeur's structural discipline in midfield, Algeria completely choked off Senegal's wide supply lines and neutralized their counter-attacking speed.

Kenya Receive A Tough WAFCON Reality Check

Returning to WAFCON for the first time in a decade, Beldine Odemba's Harambee Starlets were given a baptism of fire against top-tier opposition.

Despite an energetic opening three minutes that saw Terry Engesha rattle the crossbar, Kenya's defensive shape collapsed under sustained host pressure.

Disorganised in rest defense and visibly rattled under crowd noise, Kenya’s lack of recent high-stakes tournament experience was fully exposed.
