The National Women's Soccer League has confirmed it will begin its 2027 season earlier than ever before to accommodate the FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
The league's 15th campaign will kick off on 11 February 2027, with the annual Challenge Cup taking place five days earlier on 6 February.
The revised calendar is designed to maximise interest before and after the Women's World Cup while allowing players to represent their national teams without missing domestic fixtures.

The NWSL season will pause from 24 June to 25 July while the Women's World Cup takes place in Brazil, allowing international stars to compete at the Women's World Cup without missing NWSL matches.

Commissioner Jessica Berman believes the adjusted calendar gives the league an opportunity to benefit from the increased global attention surrounding the tournament.
"We know that major tournaments inspire millions of people to follow the sport, and our schedule allows us to be part of the lead-in and the lead-out of that big moment."

The league is also strategically opening its season during Super Bowl weekend, with broadcast partner ABC/ESPN expected to integrate the league into its coverage.
Berman revealed the league has been working closely with ESPN to ensure the NWSL features prominently across one of the biggest weekends in American sport.

The schedule announcement comes as Major League Soccer prepares to move to a summer-to-spring calendar from next season.
Although the change creates logistical challenges for clubs that share stadiums, Berman believes it could ultimately make fixture scheduling easier.
Rather than competing for stadium availability during overlapping playoff periods, the leagues will now operate on different calendars, reducing scheduling conflicts.

Despite continued speculation about aligning with Europe's football calendar, the NWSL confirmed it will remain on its spring-to-fall schedule through at least 2030.

Attendances have remained strong throughout the 2026 season, with an average crowd of 11,174 per match—just shy of the league record average of 11,249, set in 2024.
With the second half of the campaign still to come, the NWSL is hopeful it can finish the season with the highest average attendance in its history.
