France have confirmed the appointment of former captain Zinedine Zidane as the new national team head coach.
Tuesday’s announcement by the French Football Federation brings an end to prolonged speculation around Didier Dechamps’ successor.
Deschamps was at the helm of the Blues since 2012 and he left the role after they finished fourth at the recently-concluded FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Zidane’s immediate national task will be to help France stamp their authority in the UEFA Nations League and also qualify the country for the 2028 UEFA European Championship in England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
Zidane Reacts To Becoming France Head Coach
The former Real Madrid manager penned a four-year contract with the French football body that will keep him at the job until 2030.
He described his new role as a dream come true and a pride for him with appreciation for the French FA.
“I’ve often said it that there’s nothing greater than the French national team,” Zidane told the media.
“So it’s a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team. It’s also a responsibility.
“I want to thank President Philippe Diallo, the Executive Committee, and the French Football Federation (FFF) for their confidence and acknowledge the fourteen years of service from Didier and his staff.
“I also have a special thought today for all my coaches. Needless to say, I have high ambitions for the French national team!”
What Zidane's Appointment Means For France
The former French midfielder has inherited a youthful squad that features that brightest youngsters in world football including Michael Olise, Desire Doue, Kylian Mbappe and Warren Zaire-Emery.
The appointment gives Zidane the mantle to steer the future of French football and also improve the country’s position in world football.
Zidane has not coached any team since he left Real Madrid in 2021 but he holds an impeccable record in the sidelines.
Zidane's Managerial Record At Real Madrid
After starting with Real Madrid youth team between 2014 to 2016, Zidane earned the trust to lead Los Blancos' first-team where he won various titles.
He guided Madrid to lift the UEFA Champions League on three occasions, two UEFA Super Cups, two La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups and two FIFA World Cups.
He had a record of 68 wins, 26 draws and 20 defeats during his two stints in the Spanish capital.
Since he left Madrid, Zidane did not take any managerial position and has been busy with personal projects in the south of France.
