Lille sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi sent shockwaves across Europe when he announced his decision to represent Morocco, the country of his parents, instead of France at senior level. The precocious teenager had played for Les Bleus up to U-21 level before his May 2026 switch to Morocco.
Bouaddi lit up the New York New Jersey Stadium in the game against Brazil, producing a midfield display that belied his age.
Still only 18, the midfielder looked like a battle-hardened veteran as he left viewers all over wondering what they had just seen.
A Midfield Masterclass Against Brazil
Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi picked Bouaddi to start at the base of the midfield for the Atlas Lions in his competitive debut, reflecting his trust in the Lille youngster.
Bouaddi repaid the trust shown by his coach with a fine performance, announcing himself as not just a player for the future, but one for the present, as well.
Brazil could barely register a touch in the opening minutes thanks to intelligent pressing and ball movement by Bouaddi in the middle of the park.
Bouaddi touched the ball 87 times during the game, completing 60 of 66 passes. The youngster was unfazed in possession, showing bravery to offer a passing option deep in the Morocco half.
He was composed to intelligently drop the shoulder in order to beat the press and progress the ball from deep.
The young midfielder made four tackles and won nine ground duels, showing his willingness to get stuck in in midfield.
Bouaddi put on a clinic against experienced pros Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, and Lucas Paqueta in the Brazil midfield, forcing the former Real Madrid man to be hauled off after just 18 touches in the opening 45 minutes.
Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti blamed nerves for his side's shaky start, but Bouaddi had no such problems on his competitive debut for the Atlas Lions.
How Bouaddi Helped Create Morocco's Opening Goal
Bouaddi was not merely on the pitch to recycle possession as the deepest of Morocco's midfielders. His position in their aggressive press meant that he was often inside the Brazil half as they looked to smother the South Americans.
In the build-up to the opener, he joined Noussair Mazraoui and Bilal El-Khannouss to press Lucas Paqueta, resulting in a crucial turnover that ended with Ismael Saibari dinking the ball over Alisson.
The Race for His Signature: Arsenal and PSG Go Head-to-Head
To clear up any misconceptions, Bouaddi was not some unknown youngster plucked from an academy to shine on the world stage.
The teenager is well-known around Europe, having been a first-team regular for Lille since he was 16. It therefore comes as no surprise that 2026 UEFA Champions League finalists PSG and Arsenal are in a battle for his signature.
Sky Sport Switzerland reports that the Premier League champions have held concrete talks to sign the teenager, having monitored him for over a year.
Lille are expected to demand a significant fee for the talented midfielder, with an asking price of at least £60.4 million to consider a sale.
Arsenal and PSG are not the only sides interested in the sensational Moroccan midfielder, with Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Liverpool also credited with interest.
Mikel Arteta's side have reportedly presented their project to Bouaddi, promising him a starring role immediately he joins them. He will leave further discussions about his future until after the World Cup, but he is expected to be one of the hottest properties on the market this summer.
