The North London rivalry doesn't take a break, even in the transfer window. Arsenal have successfully pulled off a massive academy heist, poaching 18-year-old defensive prodigy Elijah Upson directly from the youth ranks of Tottenham.

With his scholarship at Spurs officially expiring on June 30, 2026, Tottenham had offered the talented centre-back a professional contract to keep him in N17. However, Upson rejected the deal, deciding that his development pathway and future were brighter at Arsenal.

While there is no transfer fee involved, the Gunners will be required to pay training compensation to Tottenham to complete the free transfer.

Why Arsenal Moved For Upson

Arsenal wasn't the only club monitoring Upson's contract situation. When it got out he was open to a move all the big teams were on the phone.

Chelsea and Manchester City made concrete offers to keep the defender in England, while European giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund also expressed serious interest.

Despite having massive offers, Upson opted to make the short journey across North London, committing his long-term future to Mikel Arteta's project.

Following In Matthew Upson's Footsteps

If the name sounds familiar to Arsenal fans, it should. Elijah is the son of former England international Matthew Upson, who notably began his own Premier League career at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger.

By joining the Gunners, the 18-year-old centre-back is quite literally walking in his father's footsteps.

He is already making waves on the international stage as well. Recently earning a call-up for the England U18 squad, Upson had a debut straight out of a Hollywood script, scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against France U18s.

Why Elijah Upson Is One Of England's Top Defensive Prospects

The position of the defender has been changing constantly so be technically and athletically gifted plays into Upson's hands. Before focusing entirely on football, Upson was a national schoolboy 100-metre sprint champion.

Combining an imposing physical presence with elite, world-class pace and composed long-range passing, Upson represents the ultimate prototype for a modern, front-footed centre-back.

While losing a player of his caliber for mere training compensation is a bitter pill for Tottenham to swallow, Arsenal have secured one of the brightest young defensive talents in the country.

Next season they will be looking to defend their Premier League title whilst also planning for the future. So if one of their star centre back duo leaves they have an exciting prospect waiting in the wings.
