Kobbie Mainoo will return to Manchester United after ending the World Cup without making a single appearance, with Thomas Tuchel confirming a back injury ruled him out of England's third-place play-off.
Tuchel described the setback directly, saying Mainoo felt "a sharp pain in the back" during training the day before the match and "was not ready to play."
Days earlier, former United midfielder Nicky Butt had suggested Mainoo should have faked an injury to avoid what he called a "nonsense" fixture. Instead, the midfielder was later ruled out with a genuine back injury.

Tuchel didn’t soften the diagnosis when asked by reporters.
“Kobbie was injured in the last training session. He had sharp pain in the back during training, and he was not ready to play.”
The Football Association had already confirmed the situation in a short statement before kickoff: "Kobbie Mainoo is ruled out of today's matchday squad to face France due to injury."
Mainoo's absence was even more noticeable because Tuchel rotated heavily for the third-place playoff. He made several changes to his starting eleven for the bronze-medal match, yet the Red Devils midfielder was left out of the matchday squad altogether.
Jordan Henderson, by contrast, came off the bench despite playing through a broken wrist suffered earlier in the tournament. Mainoo leaves the World Cup having played no minutes at all, despite being named in the 26-man squad ahead of Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Bournemouth's Alex Scott.
How Nicky Butt's Comments Added To The Debate
Former Man United midfielder Nicky Butt had suggested days earlier that Mainoo should have feigned an injury to avoid the "nonsense" of the third-place playoff. He argued Declan Rice looked exhausted after a long tournament and believed Mainoo's energy would "ask questions" of defenders.
Mainoo ended up missing the match anyway, though for reasons entirely separate from anything Butt had suggested days before it happened.
England still won comfortably regardless, beating France 6-4 in a high-scoring finish despite the heavy changes Tuchel made across his starting lineup.
What The Injury Means For Mainoo And Manchester United
Mainoo now returns to Carrington, where United's midfield has been strengthened by the summer arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in deals worth a combined £85 million.
United begin their Premier League campaign against Hull City on August 22, giving the midfielder around a month to recover before competitive action resumes. Mainoo heads into pre-season after establishing himself under Michael Carrick during the second half of last season.
His progress, though, has been interrupted by the back injury that ruled him out of England's final World Cup match.
