Barcelona’s iconic Camp Nou has emerged as the frontrunner to host the 2029 Champions League final, with UEFA set to discuss the potential venue.
Barcelona could be preparing to welcome the biggest night in European club football back to Camp Nou.
The iconic stadium has reportedly emerged as the favourite to host the 2029 Champions League final, with UEFA’s Executive Committee set to meet in Thessaloniki, Greece, to discuss the allocation of future finals.
If successful, it would be a significant moment for Barcelona, with Camp Nou last hosting the Champions League final in 1999, when Manchester United produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1.
Camp Nou leads the race
According to Spanish outlet AS, Camp Nou is currently considered the leading candidate to stage the 2029 showpiece.
Barcelona’s bid is understood to have received a positive response during UEFA’s previous meeting in Monaco, strengthening the club’s hopes of securing the prestigious event.
Camp Nou faces competition from Wembley and Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, although the London venue is reportedly targeting the 2030 Champions League final.
For Barcelona, bringing the final back to Catalonia would provide an opportunity to showcase the newly redeveloped stadium on one of football’s biggest stages.
The last Champions League final at Camp Nou remains one of the most memorable in the competition's history.
Bayern Munich looked set to lift the trophy in 1999 after taking the lead against Manchester United, only for Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær to score in stoppage time and complete one of the most dramatic comebacks in European football.
Espai Barça could play a key role
Barcelona’s hopes of hosting the final are closely linked to the club’s ambitious Espai Barça redevelopment project.
The renovation of Camp Nou is expected to be completed in 2028, with the stadium ultimately set to accommodate around 105,000 spectators.
That would make the ground one of the largest stadiums in European football and provide Barcelona with a venue capable of hosting major international and club fixtures.
The redevelopment has faced a number of delays, however, forcing Barcelona to temporarily move away from Camp Nou and play their home matches at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
The club have since begun their phased return to the stadium as construction continues.
Despite the complications, Barcelona remain confident that the project will be completed in time for the 2029 Champions League final should their bid be successful.
