Wolfsburg have announced the departure of Christian Eriksen by mutual consent, three months after he collapsed again during a game.

The Denmark captain is yet to return to action since his collapse during an international friendly game against Ukraine on June 7, and will now be focused on his recovery as he stays close to his family.

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg on a two-year deal in September 2025 after he left Manchester United but his impact was not enough to save the Wolves from dropping to the German second division.

During his brief stint in Germany, the 34-year-old scored three goals and provided nine assists in 31 Bundesliga matches for Wolfsburg.

WOLFSBURG'S STATEMENT CONFIRMS ERIKSEN EXIT

Wolfsburg, on Wednesday, confirmed that Eriksen requested that his contract be cut short, and they agreed with him so he can continue his recovery beside his family in Denmark.

“For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s," the club's director of sport, Dieter Hecking told the club website:

"We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.

"He has already experienced and achieved a great deal during his extraordinary career. That makes it all the more remarkable how approachable and down-to-earth we came to know him at VfL.

"Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the very best."

Eriksen, on his part, described his short stay in Wolfsburg as a memorable one while sending his best wishes as they fight to regain their Bundesliga status.

“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark," the 34-year-old said. "I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.

"My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL.

"I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me during my time at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period.”

ERIKSEN'S HEALTH SITUATION

Eriksen has been wearing an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) since he first collapsed during the opening game of the Euro 2020 tournament between Denmark and Finland in May 2021.

The 34-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he was stabilised, but the game ended in a 1-0 defeat against Denmark.

Due to the ICD device in his body, Eriksen's contract at Inter Milan was terminated based on Serie A rules, and he returned to England in January 2022, playing for Brentford until the end of the 2021-22 season before joining Manchester United on a three-year deal in July 2022.

Four years later, he suffered another episode of cardiac arrest during a friendly match against Ukraine in Odense on June 7, but he regained consciousness thanks to the ICD in his body, however, the game was abandoned.
